While the manufacture and sale of household furniture is one of the lines of business of the Singer Sri Lanka Group, the company is now taking steps to import and sell ‘office’ furniture and in this signed an agreement with Malaysia-based Artmatrix Technology, in Colombo last week.

Artmatrix are involved in furnishing high-rise buildings that occupy corporate offices and other such state buildings etc. Francis LAU - Vice President Sales, Artmatrix Technology told reporters that they are a solutions provider for the design, manufacture and supply of ergonomic seating, and open plan system of office furniture. He said that they work with architects of buldings and manufacture the office furniture according to what the customer desires.

He said that they floated Artmatrix in 2005 and are experiencing steady growth in Malaysia and in other countries with showrooms in Dubai, India, Singapore, Jakarta, Oman and Mauritius and now have launched in Sri Lanka. Hemaka Amarasooriya, Chairman, Singer Sri Lanka, told the Business Times on the sidelines of the event, that they decided to import furniture at a time Sri Lanka is exporting them.
He said that in Sri Lanka the main focus in the furniture manufacture is on household furniture while office furniture is a special area.

He said that in Sri Lanka a high demand is building up for quality office furniture and their aim is to satisfy that demand. He said that with this tie-up Singer also plans to utilize their factory facility based in Piliyandala to turn out some of the product range under license from Artmatrix.
