http://colombogazette.com/2013/10/03/minister-for-legalising-kasippu/Senior Minister for International Monetary Co-operation and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Dr. Sarath Amunugama says legalizing moonshine (kasippu) production should be considered in order to raise taxes.
Speaking at an event in Colombo today the Minister said that legalizing moonshine production and imposing a tax on it will help meet the government’s financial income targets.
He recalled that late Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle had also proposed that moonshine production be legalized.
The Minister noted that the issue is a sensitive subject as the government discourages alcohol consumption under the ‘Mathata Thitha’ program.
The authorities conduct raids on moonshine production locations often found to be operating deep inside a jungle.
Amunugama said that alcohol consumption has increased in Sri Lanka and with no way to control it the government should look at using it to raise more funds
