They've come back from the loss made last qtr..
See the segmental breakdown of result;

2011 2010 2011 2010
Tea Tea Rubber Rubber
Revenue 650,549 706,332 134,072 87,514
Cost of Sales (662,834) (627,890) (38,982) (38,517

Here we can clearly see the Rubber portion has contributed generously for their income while Tea has come down.
Q1/2011 we see an increase in Other Operating Income compared to the same qtr last year. And also a drop in EPS than in Q1/2010..

Overally I think Qtr reported EPS of 1.14 is a good come back for them..

Are we looking at the same report? I see a loss of 0.02 per share for the last quarter. for the same period last year it was a loss of 1.42. A major improvement but still a loss

Well the december report is what Gaja (and you ) have linked to :-)
here is the march report: http://www.cse.lk/cmt/upload_report_file/708_1305105078461.pdf

That shows a QoQ improvement, but a YoY decline, it's because of this erractic nature that plantations (and chicken) should trade at low PE.

HAPU's GP in 1Q2011 was Rs 83 m compared vs Rs 125 m in 4Q2010.

A large part of the better net profit in 1Q2011 (vs 4Q2010 profit) is due to lower net finance costs, and high other income.

With HAPU being predominantly a tea plantation, and wage hike coming from April 2011, a quarterly EPS of Rs 1.1 does not seem to justify share price of Rs 75 based on fundamentals for a tea plantation.

Share though is very illiquid - only 5,100 shares needed to enter Top 20 shareholders as at 31st March 2011.

Yes I intentionally gave HAPU DEC link to ask you whether were referring to it . l see that Gaja link is also for december and not for March.

Gaja could you update the march link http://www.cse.lk/cmt/upload_report_file/708_1305105078461.pdf

Yes, I agree stocks with greater seasonal and extraneous influcence should not trade at high PEs.

But I guess Shafter family shares is a a different example all together so far;-)

Correct.. That's why I didnt go for any forecasting.. They've made profit this time and results are much better owing to other income portion being a little high too.. So we have to check their next 2 qtrs at least to see whther there's a potential upside to this Wink
However we've to admit that the results are pretty much good for a company which made a loss in their 2010/Dec qtr..
The current price is however, is a bit over valued, may be with future growth we could justify it..
