Sorry to hear.
Patience is the best medicine at this moment.
Try to go for dollar cost averaging technique to improve your portfolio value with minimal risk, if you can.
If you lost 70%, then you need around 233% turn around, which is going to take you a long period to achieve. But surly that will happen. Keep calm.
God bless you.

I understand your pain. There were occasions in crisis where I lost 60-70% of a share value at a given time but came back strongly to realize over 300% profit with the same share. That is if you are a holder with patience. Not a trader with less different objective/patience who will question the approach.

Key is to identify the intrinsic value of your shares and if is undervalued to market then hold with patience.

By the way it depends on the shares in your portfolio. If you hold manipulated over valued shares at high cost becareful as above strategy may not work.

dindon1 and ranjani,
As slstock says this is the nature of this business. But indices would bounce back. That is 100% sure. No doubt at all. Only thing is time factor. No one can predict that.I think mostly you have unrealized losses. One can stay away of trading and engage in day to day work without looking at daily changes in the indices and after couple of months you would see indices have gone up and your PF too improved.During 2009 Price of some shares dropped drastically showing a huge unrealized loss in my PF. I just forgot all business in stock market and stopped dealing for about 4, 5 months. In 2010 indices were flying and my PF value increased making 300% unrealized profit to me. Since I didn't sell my shares at the peak(frankly I didn't know that was a peak in Sep/Oct last year.)today again I have a large unrealized loss. But I know it will bounce back.I suggest you to read stockmate's posts on the issue. You can make your mind after carefully reading his valuable ideas.

Dont worry ranjani. Index will definitely go up. It is a matter of time. You have to wait for couple of months that's all. When market start to rises it will be much faster than the drop.

kam2011....
Please dont post wrong advice..... markets will never rise at the speed of the fall. PLEASE BELIEVE EVERY THING IN THE PHYSICAL WORLD OBEYS CERTAIN RULES. ( FOR THE SCIENTIFICALLY INCLINED STUDY a bit of quantum , relativistic and newtonian mechnics.)

the markets largely behave more or less according to quantum principles... and uncertinity principle. ( google and see).

have you ever bumped a tennis ball ..... ball comes down due to gravitational + downward pressure from the ball holder. but the rebound is purely a function of gravitational pull , constance of rebound(called "e" -polaa paneemey sangunakaya)) and frictional force of air. I can draw word to word analogies to market movements. THE BALL REBOUNDS SLOWER AND STOPS FAR BELOW WHERE IT STARTED.

In quantum mechanics, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle states a fundamental limit on the accuracy with which certain pairs of physical properties of a particle OR ENTITY, such as position and momentum, can be simultaneously known. In other words, the more precisely one property is measured, the less precisely the other can be controlled, determined, or known.

IN market terms, if you can workout the exact tomorrows price the less accurate you can work out how far ,how fast the price movement will be.

this uncertinity is built in the the fabric of the space time of the universe. in fact we owe our existance to this uncertinity. for more details read '" brief history of time" - by prof stefpan hawkins.

I can go on an on ....... sorry if you think I am bragging....
