A ship carrying 20 to 30 tonnes of fuel and anchored in the sea off Panadura for the past four years because of legal disputes appears to be almost fully under water, Merchant Shipping Director General Ajith Senaviratne said.

SS ‘Thermopylae Sierra’ was owned by a Greek Shipping Line. It was anchored off Panadura on a Colombo High Court order. The fuel poses an environmental threat to the Colombo coastline.

“Most of the fuel was removed. But because the vessel was submerged in the sea, it was difficult to extract the remaining fuel,” he said adding that no maintenance had been carried out.
“The ship had begun to sink because its hull and deck were perishing. This was caused by the lack of maintenance,” he said.

Disaster Management officials said they had already secured the Kalutara, Gampaha, Colombo coastal belt up to Puttlam against a possible fuel leak. Officials said all ground level operations were being carried out and would be a coordinated by the three forces.

Don't blame the politicians. It's all those best and senior educated and qualified people in your government offices, courts and departments which came out from the universities in the 70s going now approximately.

"Disaster Management officials said they had already secured" means if the oil destroys the southern and western coastal belt, then IT WILL. The nature will decide that. The same as the qualified and educated health officials contained the flus by monitors not working at airports, and ordering 500 expired injections and getting them when the flu has already killed hundreds and gone off naturally, at the same time saying it's under control.

This was warned in headline news in Sunday Times long time ago.

Is it the delay in legal process to determine to move into a safer place or other legal obligations? If so, without blaming to each other this is the time to take corrective measures to prevent such accidents in the future time.
As per Sunday times Many have warned the consequences of sinking ship specially leaking of oil to sea surface which is a real danger to marine life & tourism activities.

This is definitely a case of delay in legal process......This had simple solutions even a village folk could think and this is a clear case of negligence also.

The court case is still going on, the greek crooks who are owners did not pay the dues to the srilankan shipping company that handled its operations.so they filed a case, the only question for me was the sea marshal should have expedited this hearing on urgent basis, and pressurise the greek owners.

The environmental authority in srilanka must act now to demand full damages for the concern of marine life. and demand the greek authorities.

Its a well known fact in shipping industry greeks are well known to pass through one ear & to come out from the other without one noticing.

These owners has to pay quite a large sum.........to the srilankan counterpart/shipping agency.

scratch

when a court case is being heard you have to be very very careful not to damage the vessel in concern when its being salvaged off,the ship owners can sue back and the sea marshal must make sure he is unbiased toward both parties.

in hambantota port there is a vessel still berthed as of this day as the owners did not pay the chinese company that built this vessel, and the vessel owners had changed the name so as to undetect from being arrested.however it was arrested last year off hambantota and stil at berth i presumed. study

Imagine it was sewage truck full of feces and the somebody go to courts against the owner, so the swaziland police go to courts, and the swaziland judge orders to detain the shit load of truck in the the swaziland capital car park according the to the supreme law of Swaziland. 4 years go. the truck is in pieces. The feces is everywhere in the ditches and roads. Children dies from illness. It smells everywhere. The land becomes a waste.
All done in the name of the law? Very Happy That's all because of Swaziland court was upholding the supreme law. lol!
Swaziland judges will also send people to jail if they question the logic and calling it the dog law, saying the judges were the upholding the law.
I'm not talking about Sri Lanka here.

It's nothing wrong with the law. It's the stupidity of the judges (and we have to stand when they come and call them 'swamini'. How low can we get than this?), lawyers, officers and all the best educated and qualified people who came to those places with qualifications and experience who did not use common sense and brain of a 4 year old. Was it an issue with proper people not in the right position? These judges, lawyers, officers are the best and qualified the country can make.

Imagine it was a nuclear waste ship? Then what? Was it all because of the law that it destroy the whole country then?
I think all the judges etc. who did this should be hanged by people. That is justice. That is not dog's law. They have failed to protect the innocents. In fact these judges endangered the country they could have destroyed the whole beaches. Nobody should be above law. Including the judges.

I would like thank the judges of republic of Sri Lanka for so graciously helping me out sink this old junk ship without any issues to get the insurance money. I will definitely tell my fellow businessmen how friendly and hospitable Sri Lankans are.
Sincerely,
Greek ship owner

P.S. I will send the gifts we agreed especially for the appeal case.

Ship sank at Panadura has caused a big threat to the environment. 1586502644oil3

Oil slick reaches Wellawatte shore after ship sinks

A thin layer of oil from the rusting cargo vessel which sank off Panadura is reportedly flowing ashore at Wellawatte.

The coast guard and Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) officials are currently removing the sand affected by the oil, Director General of Coast Conservation Department Anil Premaratne said.

The rusting 15,000-tonne Thmothrmopolyseara, a Cyprus-flagged carrier, went down late Thursday after remaining anchored outside the Colombo harbour since 2009 following a dispute over its cargo of steel.

The Disaster Management Center (DMC) says it had mobilised 500 volunteers, including security personnel, for a coastal clean up if the problem got worse.

Much of the 600 tonnes of oil from the ship had been pumped out before it sank and only a small residue remained aboard.

The coast line from Mount Lavinia and Negombo was at risk, DMC director Sarath Kumara had told AFP.

The vessel had been detained by courts following litigation over the cargo of steel valued at over $300 million, according to reports.

I think this is clear case of carelessness, reckless, negligence and stupidness and responsible persons should be severely punished.

What I disagree with AJ,

I do not think it is reasonable to always be anti-social and blame the educated people in Sri Lanka for everything.

What I agree,

This utter recklessness, lack of caring, irresponsibility and accountabilty of the authorities who are responsible. Also was there no way this court case could finished to give a verdict after 3 years by now? Or is it a matter pointless talking?

This is a well known Sri Lankan practice which had been happening since our ancient king's time. You know how we brought our enemies to our land by ourselves. There's a close similarity between that and this incident. Razz
