Despite rubber being one of the key productive assets there is growing concern on the continuous decline in prices since 2012. Although there had been a boom for nearly a decade, Sri Lanka’s rubber prices have declined drastically in recent times.

Colombo Rubber Traders’ Association (CRTA) Chairman, M.S. Rahim said, “The price drop in the world reflects on us too. With lower prices and increase in cost of production we will be faced with losses. Smallholders too have to bear the price drop and drop in production due to bad weather that prevailed in 2013.”

Commodity or stock will never stay in the same place for a long period. . Eventually we will see recovery in rubber prices. We have economy cycles, industry cycles and business cycles. Every industry has up and down. Some industries, commodities, stocks and currencies can become bullish suddenly

I don’t know about latest percentage of holding rubber for some rubber related plantations companies. KGAL, KVAL plantations have more rubber followed by KOTA. Other plantations such as HOPL, AGAL, HASU, KAHA, ELPL, WATA, NAMU and BALA also have rubber. Remaining plantations companies too have little bit of rubber. Some have diversified into agri, flower, coconut, palm oil, timber and Hydro power projects.

Major tea plantations companies are MASK, BOPL, TPL and UDPL. They have timber too. Some have commenced an accelerated program of planting Cinnamon, Pepper and Cocoa etc in the future.

In this group each company has mid and long term plans. Those who implement their plans wisely could outperform others in the coming years. Those days KGAL, KVAL and KOGA were laggards. Later they had good rally and outperform others. In some periods MASK and WATA outperform others. During last couple of quarters KAHA were resilient. Who will be next?
