Hi Members ,

found interesting about the potential we will have in this new venture., may be we could do this may be in a small way ?

I append below the article that appeared on LBO.lk;

thanks LBO.lk

Aug 09, 2015 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s agricultural ministry is to sign an agreement with China to supervise quality in bananas that will be exported to China, Government Spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said.
The agreement on phytosanitary requirements for banana exports will be signed between China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the Quarantine Service of the island’s Ministry of Agriculture.
Banana which is widely cultivated in Sri Lanka can also be exported after local consumption, Senaratne said.
China has proposed to enter into a protocol between the two countries in respect of Banana exports from Sri Lanka and the Cabinet of Ministers approved a proposal made by the Minister of Agriculture deleted Dissanayake to enter into the protocol in this respect.

After the elections there will be enough bananas to export because we will do away with the banana republic. On top of that many UPFA politikkos will go bananas adding more bananas.

As per my limited experience I think our banana varieties are too big for Chinese consumption. I may be wrong.

I live in Uk and I see almost all banana comes from Latin American counties like Peru, Costa Rica......those banana has a thick skin and will last longer to cover the export time to consumption.

May be we could get these varieties and further enhance the varieties and extend the export potentials to USSR and Japan.

Thanks

On a lighter mood even the bananas of the banana republic we want to export to China have a thick skin. And as for what the spoke person RS says has to be taken with a pinch of salt.

At the moment we grow Cavendish and Dole types mainly for export market. They have thick skin.

Dole Lanka and CIC Agri are doing it. Rejected products are coming to local market. One banana is priced at about 35 LKR.
There are some tissue culture labs - including Agri Dept. at Pera - engaged in producing invitro plants and anyone can ask them if interested.

the price is high as they supply it to your doorstep.
