Understand the market and stocks cycles. The reality is that investment is not risk free but when approached in a disciplined manner, it is one of the most efficient ways to build up one's net worth.

In brief panic sellers, gamblers and fools are selling and we are collecting. It's worthwhile to put FD in CSE for a couple of years then having a 5% interest rate. It will give us 50%+ profit fr sure.

Sri Lanka’s T-bond yield down after easing inflation data

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Treasury bond yields edged down on Monday in active trade after the island nation’s statistics office’s data showed the national inflation had eased in October, while the T-bill rates remained inactive, dealers said.

Sri Lanka’s nation-wide year-on-year inflation eased to 70.6 percent in the 12 months to October 2022 after hitting record high in the previous month, the state statistics office said, following the worst currency triggered by the island’s intermediate regime central bank.

“We saw more activity after the inflation announcement today,” a dealer said.

“No treasury bills were active today”.

A bond maturing on 15.01.2028 ended at 31.75/32.00 percent on Monday, down from Friday’s 32.00/25 percent.

A bond maturing on 01.07.2032 closed at 29.60/30.00 percent, down from Friday’s close of 30.10/90 percent.

The Central Bank’s guidance peg for interbank transactions remained unchanged at 363.50 rupees against the US dollar.

The kerb market rate was at 371.50 – 373.00 rupees against the US dollar.

Commercial banks offered dollars for telegraphic transfers between 372.00 and 372.10 for small transactions, data showed.

Buying rates are between 362.00 – 362.10 rupees. (Colombo/Nov 21/2022)

While the Central Bank is largely expected to keep the key rates unchanged at the monetary policy review scheduled to be announced today, First Capital Research (FCR) expects the current pause in the policy rate hike seen since July could be followed by sizable rate cuts in the first half of next year, to support growth.

Taking a sanguine approach, FCR said the economy would return to complete normalcy with the country being able to activate the International Monetary Fund deal unlocking other multilateral and bilateral funding while potentially regaining access to global capital markets.

“Thus, the complete stabilisation of economic indicators may give rise to a possibility of sizable rate cuts towards 1H2023, with a significant probability to fast-track the revival of the economy,” FCR said in its customary pre-policy analysis released ahead of the monetary policy.

Sri Lanka is discussing with the World Bank and International Monetary Fund to get loans of 1.9 billion US dollars after a reform program with International Monetary Fund is approved, former Central Bank Governor Indrajit Coomaraswamy said.

A policy loan now being discussed with the World Bank may bring around 700 million US dollars, Coomaraswamy told a business forum organized by CT CLSA Securities, a Colombo-based brokerage.

The Asian Development Bank may also give around 1.2 billion US dollars most of which will be budget support, he said.

Japan has also promised funding, he said.

Multilateral lenders and Japan will usually give loans for projects which will boost economic activities.

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has successfully avoided 10-hour powercuts in 2023 after securing a continuous supply of coal, Public Utilities Commission Chairman Janaka Ratnayake said.

“We had an issue about two months ago regarding our coal reserves. But we have come out of that situation and are now in a favourable place,” said Ratnayake.

“We have secured around 25 coal shipments for this year and if we can get around seven or eight more coal shipments then we will be able to run till August this year”.

Sri Lanka has secured seven shipments of coal amounting to 58,000 metric tons so far.

The state-run Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said another six or seven shipments are expected in January.

“With the coal we have, we can restart the Norochcholai power plant unit from January 8 onwards,” said Ratnayake.

The country needs around 2.5 million metric tons of coal for the year. Around 40 percent of electricity is produced by burning coal.
