May 08, 2012 (LBT) - Both blue chips and retail favourite’s witnessed a selling spree during today’s trading closing the bourse in red. There was panic during the day’s trading which could be a result of the recent controversies that surrounded the market. The benchmark ASPI shed 79.84 points to close at 5,295 whilst the MPI of more liquid stocks shed 1.53% to close at 4,831. Total turnover for the day was over 429 mn (Approximately USD 3.3 million) Total volume traded was close to 26 mn shares.

Heavyweight JKH saw a block of 200,000 shares change hands at Rs.203 whilst retail caps such as CSF and PCH also witnessed block trades during the day. Nation Lanka Finance emerged as the top contributor for the day as over 5.1mn shares changed hands at Rs.10. PCH continued to witness large blocks changing hands as another 3mn shares changed hands at Rs.8.80 during the day. The counter closed at Rs.7.30 shedding over 5% for the day.

Index heavy CARS continued to witness accumulation and contributed over 14mn towards the days turnover. The counter closed at Rs.456 shedding Rs.14 for the day. Further caps such as DFCC,HAYC and RCL witnessed institutional accumulation during the day. Share price of CTC rose by Rs.9 after an Interim dividend of Rs.7.90 was announced during the day. NEST witnessed the complete opposite during the day and closed at Rs.1,176.50 shedding 4.49% for the day.

Retail favourite BLUE witnessed a heavy selling spree during the day mainly owing to shattered hopes of retailers as the much anticipated share split was voted against by the shareholders. The voting cap shed 10.53% to close at 5.20 whilst the non voting cap closed at Rs.2.20 shedding 15.38%. In addition, retail volumes were led by ATL,PAP and SFS whilst SEMB.X emerged as the top gainer.
