There are many other things should be prioritized before doing wasteful projects such as Hambantota harbour, Sourthen highway, Mihin Air, hotel projects in Colombo etc..

for rajapaksha family development means buildings and high ways because no one in their family have proper educational qualifications to realize the development does not mean larger buildings, highways on behalf of public money.

comparing Singapore with Sri Lanka is one of the most stupid thing you can do as Singapore development does not mean just investing on buildings and highways . It is worth to compare the profiles of Singapore cabinet ministers with Sri Lankan cabinet ministers.
http://www.cabinet.gov.sg/content/cabinet/appointments.html

Can you pls explain the Educational & other things you expect that Govt. should concentrate other than building & Developing Infrastructure such as Faster Road access, Modern & strategically located Ports..etc etc....
Yes not only in SRI LANKA even in USA or UK all the infrastructure development take place by utilizing Govt revenue or by way of Grants & Loans....What made you think OBAMA spends his family wealth for USA development work...or Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth is giving her wealth for development work in the UK...????

leave Singapore for a while & focus UAE....do you believe the Great rulers of the UAE did focus the other arias before involving into building the High rise buildings & speedy & accessible roads, Modern Ari Traffic Facilities, State of the Art Ports...etc etc.....the answer is a big ..NO..they first did developed those infrastructures & then gained the attention of the rest of the world to UAE, where many educated & wealthy people around the world moved to UAE for their business and that resulted the GOVT of UAE earn more revenues & also more professionals into UAE which in return gave their own people to grab the knowledge & know how from those professionals..there after the Rulers of UAE were focusing to Educate their own people & go ahead with other social development, having had enough expatriate professionals & sufficient revenues to spend for that kind of development...!
Now after few decades...the UAE Natives are more professional & well educated ..they have taken the lead role in Business, ahead of the foreigners who dominated the UEA economy in early 70s....

I do not agree 100% with the way, how some of Present Development projects are handled, but we should appreciate the hard work Done than just blaming for what have not been done...

So you hope after building skycrappers people from all over the world will come to Sri Lanka to work here because huge buildings are situated here. you expect professionals from all over the world will come to Sri Lanka while many professionals such as medical doctors, University professors etc are protesting to increase their salaries or leaving Sri Lanka for better opportunities. Very Happy Can you compare OIL wealth UAE infrastructure investments with mainly Chinese loan/grant based Sri Lankan infrastructure investments... Laughing

@ RIO,

You tried to tell us a big story by opening this topic.

Sri Lankans are greedy people. Naturally we first rush for the food in any function, workshop, wedding, AGM than looking into the real purpose.

So do not blame us for enjoying "Thanakola" here.

We are also very famous for talking about what we do not know.
At least we should gather info about the other countries , how they get loans and do massive infrastructure development with long term targets and how international private parties come in and establish to carryout the secondary stages.

BTW, I think we do not need to emphasize we are not fans of MR or anybody. We talk what we believe.
I know most of the people think Im a supporter of this Govt. Personally I have had good connection with the opposition (not JVP) for many decades than the bgrs in power.

@econ,

for your info only.

Dubai , the famous place of UAE / Middle East for huge infra development has no oil reserve with them.

They have no oil, no water, no human for work ( 80 % are expatriate workers) , no greenery, no waterfalls, no fresh water reservoirs, no historical monuments except few earthen buildings , no fertile lands - grow only dates, all the vegetables, rice , yams, flowers etc are imported .

still they get flow of tourists, investors, developers many times than us.

I agree with most what you said about DUBAI. But Sri Lanka still have much to develop with transparency, accountability, justice, honesty, recognition to the right people, reduce wastefulness etc etc. Infrastructure is a key for development. But physical developments are not enough. There should to attempts made for freer environment for people and investment backuped up by fairness.

There is always 2 sides to this story, I however do recognize certain things the GOvn did have to be acknowledged and admired. They still have a long way to go to win admiration and trust of more local and foreigners.

In Singapore if you go to where Indian Bangladeshi neighbor folks live and work like Little India you'll find it littered and floors covered in litter sometimes. It depends on who's there even in Singapore.

On the other hand Sri Lankans are very very proud of the sandy sunny beaches which they think a big thing for tourists, leasure blah blah. But you have to see the how beaches in other countries are. You'll lose that proud patriotism.

Singapore economy developed due to massive trading activities, supported by well developed sea ports and air port and efficient transport system. Some say developing hambanthota sea port near the main shipping route between east and west is a waist of money, I think it should have biult some 30 years earlier and we are too late. Hambanthota sea port is definitely a investment for future. Infrastructure develop has largely neglected over past few decades due to war and difficult economic envioronment. But now if we need to sustain our growth plans, we need high quality infrastructure, and there is no other solution than borrowing money as debt to GDP ratio will reduce if we have a real economic growth over the next few years. Then repayment of debt wouldn't be a problem. Of cause there are plenty of corruption going on , that's true, but that Is not a reason for us to stop everything and be depressed with only negative ideas like 'aj'.

In short, to make money you need infrastructure, and to make infrastructure you need money. So borrowing is a one solution.

Ask where the money come from and what are the benefits ?
If Benefits outnumber the cost in the long term, then it is a worthy.
But here it is not and I do not think we have even generated a single new job by undertaking this.
Except some crooks got damn rich by siphoning more out of the system.
Good luck Grass Lovers. Very Happy

I personally dislike about JVP political behavior. I'm not going to talk about JVP. I told that what general public think. Everyone likes to see developed country. we never mind who lead our country to development. He may be Gotta or any one. we really support who really want to develop Sri Lanka. But in our country development is merely exhibitionism. As Slstock told infrastructure is the key of development. But it is not enough to be a developed country.

Development mean
Economic development generally refers to the sustained, concerted actions of policymakers and communities that promote the standard of living and economic health of a specific area. Economic development can also be referred to as the quantitative and qualitative changes in the economy. Such actions can involve multiple areas including development of human capital, critical infrastructure, regional competitiveness, environmental sustainability, social inclusion, health, safety, literacy, and other initiatives. Economic development differs from economic growth. Whereas economic development is a policy intervention endeavor with aims of economic and social well-being of people, economic growth is a phenomenon of market productivity and rise in GDP.

Anyway I really appreciate Gottas effort. He try to make beautiful city. As a general public we should help him to success his Colombo city development plan. But we need to do more.

Thanks for enlightening me (and many others in the forum) RIO. Shocked
Those internally generated money ( a few King Coconuts & a few exotic plant sales ) will be enough to meet the payments need of the money borrowed on high Cost, If you are happy then, I think I need not to say more as I have already said enough. Very Happy
Good Luck again !

Accepted.

Especially when they faced credit crisis during last two years.

Burj Dubai, the tallest building was renamed as Burj Khalifa after being saved by the Emir of Abu Dhabi . Most of us watched the opening ceremony in a sad mood.

Let's hope to write a different story here. I personally believe our credit management is still not that bad. I may be wrong.
