Colombo Shares retreat after four consecutive days’ gains on domestic and international economic concerns. Benchmark All Share Index dropped by 22.82 points (-0.37) to close at 6,117.97 and S&P SL 20 Index dropped by 29.51 index points (-0.85%) to close at 3,433.00.

Market turnover was LKR 883mn. Almost 60% of the daily turnover was contributed by several crossings recorded in Janashakthi Insurance, Lanka Ceramics, Nations Trust Bank and Carsons Cumberbatch. 11.4mn shares (3.14%) of Janashakthi Insurance changed hands at LKR 13.70 per share as a single crossings which is most likely the stake held by the third largest shareholder.. In addition to that 2.4mn shares of Lanka Ceramics which accounts for 8% of the issued shares changed hands in two crossings at LKR 120.00 per share.

Accordingly Lanka Ceramics topped the turnover list with LKR 288mn followed by Janashakthi Insurance (LKR 167mn) and Sampath Bank (LKR 52mn).

Touchwood Investments, Central Investment & Finance and PC House were the heavily traded stocks during the day and those closed among the top losers. Further, 17 stocks reached 52 week low prices today.

At the end of the day foreign investors were net buyers with a net inflow of LKR 17.7mn while foreign activity accounted for 29% of the total market activity.

Cash map was low at 24.5% indicating heavy selling pressure during the day.

Jul 03, 2013 (LBT) - Bluechips lose value: Following yesterday’s Moody’s downgrade from positive to stable investor sentiment turned negative during the day with considerable selling pressure re-entering the market. The bourse was on a sharp downtrend until about 1pm reaching an intra-day low of 6,112 before recovering to the 6,140 mark. However the final hour’s weighed average results in a closing index point of 6,117 illustrating a decline of 23 points. John Keells Holdings, Commercial Leasing and Commercial Bank were the main negative contributors to the index. 8 crossings for the day; Lanka Ceramics, the newly acquired subsidiary of Royal Ceramics registered 2 crossings for the day with 2.4mn shares changing hands at LKR120.0. Janashakthi Insurance and Carsons saw a crossing each of 11.4mn and 100k shares respectively. Banking sector counter with attractive valuations; Nations Trust Bank registered 2 further off-board deals of 630k shares at LKR65.0.

Diversified and Banks record heavy dips: Considerable interest was noted in Sampath Bank though counter dipped 1.3% to LKR200.0. More banking counters Commercial Bank and Hatton National Bank registered drops of 1.5% and 0.5% respectively. Selling pressure was moderate in John Keells Holdings and Hayleys two of the largest conglomerates as the counters lost 2.7% and 0.5% respectively. Retailers on a cautious note: Retail selling pressure was high in the retail favourite counters Touchwood Investments and Central Investments and Finance while the former recorded a new 52-week low price of LKR4.0.
