Sri Lanka deficit to move down with lower rates, PPPs: CB Governor
06 Aug, 2013 09:59:35
Aug 06, 2013 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's budget deficit will narrow and debt will slow with falling domestic interest rates and public private partnerships in infrastructure, Central Bank Governor Nivard Cabraal said.

"We will see a huge reduction in interest costs," Cabraal told a sovereign and banking forum organized by Fitch.
In 2014 the budget deficit is likely to be about 5.2 percent of gross domestic product, he said.

Private investments in infrastructure would also increase, he said.

The Colombo port has already seen an investment by a port company.

Public Private Partnerships will also increase in the future, especially in roads.

Chinese firms have been given Sri Lanka's largest toll road project.

Interest rates should be a function of economic activity of a country, many countries have tinkered with rates too much without having economic reforms and had problems to face in the long run. The disparity between bank rates and govt bill rates are indicators of this.

Current economic model of western public finance, which also CB interest rates, is 5 minutes before it's collapse. There is nowhere to move interest rates. They can go higher or lower. Time to reset dear friends.

There is no room for CB rate cut further. what they have reduced is more than enough.
CB did the mistake of reducing .50 basic point at once, which they should have done by two .25 points gradually over six months period.

further rate cut will bring more adverse effects on the economy. what Cabba meant was reduction of commercial banks lending rates, not CB rate cut.
