COLOMBO, Sept 26 (Reuters) - Sri Lankan stocks edged up on Thursday, helped by foreign buying in blue chips such as Commercial Bank of Ceylon and foreign inflows boosting sentiment, traders said.

The main share index edged up 0.04 percent, or 2.54 points, to close at 5,786.16.

Foreign investors were net buyers of 233.3 million rupees ($1.8 million) worth of shares on Thursday, extending net foreign inflows over the past six days to 1.09 billion rupees.

They have been net buyers of 19.72 billion rupees so far this year.

Shares in Commercial Bank of Ceylon, the largest listed lender in Sri Lanka, rose 1.47 percent to 117.70 rupees, while Carson Cumberbatch PLC gained 5.04 percent to close at 389.90 rupees.

Thursday's turnover was 920.2 million rupees, the highest in two weeks.

Sept 26, 2013 (LBO) - Sri Lanka stocks were flat Thursday with interest in diversified companies and some speculative trading, brokers said, while the rupee was steady in forex markets, dealers said.

The benchmark Colombo All Share Price Index (ASPI) closed 2.54 points higher at 5,786.16, up 0.04 percent, provisional data showed. The S&P SL20 closed 13.61 points higher at 3,219.09, up 0.42 percent.

Turnover was 920.23 million rupees, up from 582.78 million rupees a day earlier with 115 stocks losing ground and 55 firms making gains.

Foreigners bought stocks worth 267.34 million rupees, down from 285.44 million a day earlier, against sales worth 34 million rupees, down from 173.57 million rupees.

Carson Cumberbatch which closed 18.70 rupees higher at 389.90 rupees and Commercial Bank closed 1.70 rupees higher at 117.70 rupees contributed most to the index gain, stock exchange data showed.

Bukit Darah closed 10.50 rupees higher at 663.00 rupees and AIA Insurance closed 31.50 rupees higher at 305 rupees.

LOLC closed 1.20 rupees higher at 55.30 rupees.

Sri Lanka Telecom which lost 1.00 rupee to close at 39 rupees. CTC closed 40 cents lower at 1,040.60 and Distilleries closed 1.80 rupees lower at 183.20 rupees.

Browns Investments closed 20 cents lower at 2.40 rupees and Sampath Bank closed 2.00 rupees lower at 170.00 rupees.

Speculative play was evident with more than 48.78 million Touchwood shares changing hands during the day, closing 1.50 rupees higher at 5.00 rupees.

CIFL saw more than 8.6 million shares change hands, closing 20 cents higher at 1.50 rupees.

HNB closed flat at 150.00 rupees and LIOC also closed unchanged at 25 rupees and JKH closed 20 cents lower at 222.70 rupees.

The dollar was trading in at 131.90/132.00 rupees in the spot market amidst low volumes, the forex market was quiet, dealers said after the dollar opened at 131.95/132.05 rupees.

No trades are taking place above 132.00 on central bank moral suasion, but import demand and dollar sales were subdued on Thursday, dealers said.

A liquid five year Treasury bond was quoted at 11.71/75 percent during late trading, down from 11.75/78 percent levels yesterday.

Excess liquidity in the banking system fell to 49.1 billion rupees on Wednesday, down from 59.31 billion rupees the previous day with outright sales of Treasury bills.

The move will help lock up forex reserves and strengthen the rupee, analysts said

Heavy trading in Touchwood continues

The Colombo bourse yesterday closed on positive territory with the All Share Price Index gaining a marginal 2.54 points (0.04%) while S&P SL20 was up 13.61 points (0.42%) on a turnover of Rs.920.2 million, up from the previous day’s Rs.582.8 million, with 107 losers outpacing 73 gainers while 133 counters closed flat.

Much of the day’s turnover came off block trades in Sampath Bank, Commercial Bank (voting), HNB (voting) and LIOC which together contributed Rs.251.8 million to the day’s turnover.

Touchwood continued to be very heavily traded seeing nearly 48.8 million shares done between Rs.3.20 and Rs.5.20 closing Rs.1.70 up at Rs.4.80 contributing Rs.203.7 million to the day’s turnover.

The company’s AGM was held yesterday and neither Mr. Roscoe Maloney, nor his wife, Swarna, were present at the meeting. However, Maloney appeared on a video saying that he would invest USD 20 million of his personal money into a subsidiary within the next two weeks.

"The ASPI traded within a narrow band during much of the day and ended broadly flat. Trades on TWOD, COMB, SAMP, and HNB collectively accounted for over 65% of market turnover, inclusive of block trades," John Keells Stock Brokers said in a market report.

There was a foreign inflow of Rs. 233.27 mn. on purchases of Rs. 267.35 mn. and sales of Rs. 34.07 mn.

JKH, the most traded stock in recent days, closed Rs.1.40 down at Rs.221.50 on nearly 0.2 million shares done between Rs.221.50 and Rs.224 contributing Rs.41.6 million to turnover. There were no crossings in this stock.

Brokers said that there was considerable interest in banking stock with block trades of 0.6 million Sampath at Rs.170, 0.5 million Commercial Bank (voting) at Rs.116, 0.5 million HNB at Rs.150 and 01 million LIOC at Rs.25.

There were floor trades in Sampath of over 0.7 million shares with the counter closing Rs.2 down at Rs.170 trading between Rs.170 and Rs.172 contributing Rs.125.1 million to turnover.

Commercial Bank closed Rs.2 up at Rs.18 on slightly over 0.5 million shares done between Rs.115.50 and Rs.118 generating a turnover of Rs.59.9 million while nearly 0.5 million NTB closed 90 cents up at Rs.60 trading between Rs.59.10 and Rs.60.70 contributing Rs.29.2 million to turnover.

Other shares that showed volume included Richard Pieris closing 20 cents up at Rs.6.40 on nearly 3.6 million shares, 6 million Asia Asset Finance closing 40 cents up at Rs.2.30, nearly 0.6 million Hemas Holdings closing 50 cents up at Rs.32, 8.6 million Central Investment and Finance closing 40 cents up at Rs.1.2 and over 1.6 million Expo closing 10 cents down at Rs.6.80.
