The Colombo bourse yesterday closed in the green on a low turnover of Rs.575.1 million, down from the previous day’s Rs.723 million, with the All Share Price Index up 47.42 points (0.80%) and S&P SL20 up 31.92 points (0.98%) with 160 gainers strongly outpacing 56 losers while 87 counters closed flat.

"The ASPI rose sharply during the latter half of trading to close at a 34 day high. Turnover was dominated by crossings on JKH and HNB," John Keells Stock Brokers said in a market report.

A foreign inflow of Rs. 165.72 mn. was posted with purchases of Rs. 225.83 mn. against sales of Rs. 60. 11 mn.

Block trades in HNB where 0.6 million shares were crossed at Rs.150 in a deal worth Rs.90 million and JKH where slightly over 0.3 million was crossed at Rs.217 on a transaction worth Rs.68.8 million accounted for slightly less than Rs.160 million of the day’s turnover.

Touchwood continued to be heavily traded despite negative reports on the company, closing 40 cents down at Rs.4.60 on 9.6 million shares done between Rs.4.60 and Rs.5.10 contributing Rs.47.1 million to turnover.

"There’s a lot of speculative trading on the share,’’ a broker said. "Day traders are active in the stock cashing in on 10 cent price movements.’’

Brokers said that the trend of heavy speculative trading in low priced shares continued with Swarnamahal closing 40 cents up at Rs.2.90 on nearly 7.7 million shares, Asia Asset Finance closing 10 cents up at Rs.2.30 on over 9.3 million shares, Browns Investments closing 30 cents up at Rs.2.80 on over 6.6 million shares, Blue Diamonds closed 10 cents down at Rs.3.40 on nearly 3.7 million shares and HVA Foods closing 30 cents down at Rs.11.60 on nearly 0.8 million shares.

The Finance Company was also active gaining a rupee to close at Rs.4.30 on over 1.4 million shares.

Sampath Bank closed 10 cents down at Rs.171.10 on nearly 0.2 million shares done between Rs.171.10 and Rs.173.90 contributing the day’s second highest turnover of Rs.29.5 million on the floor. An unusually large quantity of Hemas Holdings was also transacted closing 80 cents up at Rs.32.80 on nearly 0.9 million shares done between Rs.31.90 and Rs.33.50.

Commercial Bank (voting) closed 80 cents up at Rs.119 on over 0.2 million shares, NDB was Rs.4 up to Rs.152.50 on over 0.1 million shares and JKH closed flat at Rs.215.10 on 42,257 shares.

Oct 10, 2013 (LBO) - Sri Lanka stocks closed 0.80 percent higher on investor interest in banking, diversified and tobacco stocks and speculative play continuing, while the rupees was unchanged amidst low activity levels, brokers and dealers said.

The benchmark Colombo All Share Price Index closed 47.42 points higher at 5,957.37, up 0.80 percent, after reaching an intraday high of 5,964.76.

The S&P SL20 closed 31.92 points higher at 3,286.91, up 0.98 percent.

Turnover was 575.09 million rupees, down from 722.97 million a day earlier, with shares of 147 firms gaining against 54 losers.

Foreigners bought shares worth 225.82 million rupees, down from 349.85 million yesterday, and sold shares worth 60.11 million rupees, up from 20.29 million the previous day.

JKH closed 10 cents lower at 215.10 rupees and featured in one crossing and Hemas Holdings closed flat at 32.80 rupees, also featuring in a single crossing.

Hatton National Bank closed flat at 150.00 rupees and featured in one crossing.

Sampath Bank closed 40 cents higher at 171.10 rupees and Commercial Bank closed 80 cents higher a 119.00 rupees.

Troubled Touchwood closed 30 cents lower at 4.60 rupees with more than 9.6 million shares changing hands.

Swarnamahal Finance closed 40 cents higher at 2.90 rupees with more than 7.69 million shares traded.

Asia Asset closed 10 cents higher at 2.30 rupees and saw 9.33 million shares change hands.

Blue Diamond closed 10 cents lower at 3.40 rupees with more than 3.68 million shares traded and The Finance Company closed 90 cents higher at 4.30 rupees with more than 1.4 million shares changing hands.

Ceylon Tobacco closed 32.80 rupees higher at 1,180.40 rupees and Carson Cumberbatch closed 20 cents higher at 400.10 rupees.

Asian Hotels and Properties closed 3.90 rupees higher at 75.00 rupees and Bukit Darah closed 10.00 rupees higher at 685.00 rupees.

DFCC Bank closed 3.50 rupees higher at 124.00 rupees.

Sri Lanka Telecom closed 80 cents lower at 39.10 rupees and Dialog closed 10 cents lower at 8.80 rupees.
Nestle Lanka closed 17.40 rupees lower at 1,972.40 rupees.

The Sri Lankan rupee was trading at 131.12/15 against the US dollar in late trading in the spot market, unchanged from the previous day’s close, on subdued activity levels, dealers said.

A liquid five year Treasury bond was trading at 11.52/55 percent, down from 11.65/67 the previous day.
