The market opened the week with a regressive momentum and closed the trading day with a decline in both indices, the added. The ASI closed the day recording 6,767.59, dropping 144.39 points or 2.09%. The liquid MPI closed for the day dropping 112.52 points or 1.76% to end the day at 6,274.45. The market capitalization was Rs. 2.38 trillion.
The market turnover was Rs 1.9Bn. The highest contributors to the daily turnover were Trans Asia Hotels PLC (Rs 253.7Mn), Vallibel One Limited (Rs 232.3Mn) and Orient Garments Limited (Rs 206.4Mn). The best performing sectors for the day were Banking, Finance and Insurance (Rs 442.5Mn) and Diversified Holdings (Rs 364.3Mn) sectors correspondingly.
The total traded volume for the day was 89.3Mn. The highest traded stock for the day was SMB Leasing PLC with 9.1Mn shares changing hands, a stock broker said. The market recorded crossings on Peoples Merchant Bank (PMB) and Distilleries Company of Sri Lanka (DIST). The market reflected an overall selling sentiment; further it did not have any positive movements during the day which triggered the panic selling in the market. The fundamentally strong blue chips experienced a drop in share value and continued to trade below their potential price levels, a stock broker said.(BS)
