he Sri Lankan hotel industry will need an additional 40,778 rooms in the next five years to achieve the government’s target of 2.5 million tourist arrivals by 2016, said HVS India, a consulting and services organization, in a recently released research report titled; “Sri Lanka Tourism: Poised for Growth”.

It states that the hotel industry in Sri Lanka currently comprises of a number of hotels that have not been refurbished owing to the decline in tourist arrivals in the past few years.

According to the research, the country is witnessing a revival in tourism, and requires more hotel rooms to sustain and reap the best from its tourism potential. The country currently has 14,161 registered hotel rooms, and the majority of these rooms are concentrated in Colombo and Greater Colombo areas. It also mentions that there are 3,190 rooms in the Colombo City and 2,494 in the Greater Colombo Area. This is a 22% and 17% percent share respectively.

The research report further stated that the Kuchchaveli Resort Development, coming under the Eastern Province Region Development, is expected to include more than 3,000 hotel and resort rooms along with theme and water park facilities.

5 years mean a long time.I hope we will be able to achieve that goal.Already Mega Hotel Projects are in progress, some will start soon.Existing hotels are expanding and upgrading their facilities. Future will no be bad for tourism. Now we should focus more East Asian Countries and India, due to economic crisis in Europe, we can expect much from that region.
