Drunk cricket player tries to open plane cabin door at 35,000ft.

A drunken cricket player tried to open the cabin door on a plane while he searched for the toilet, it as been reported.
BA stressed that it is impossible to open the pressurised door in mid-flight.
By Radhika Sanghani
9:16AM BST 02 Jul 2013
The Sri Lankan sports player was seen trying to open the cabin door at 35,000ft on a British Airways flight from St Lucia to Gatwick after playing against the West Indies.
He was spotted pushing and pulling for up to two minutes at the exterior day on the full flight by fellow passengers.
Passenger Charlene Francis, 26, said: “It was pretty frightening. Suddenly he came over and tried to open the cabin door several times. It went on for a few minutes. He was pulling quite heavily.
“Some of his team-mates were shouting and telling him to stop. Somebody said they had been drinking for four hours before they got on the plane.”
The recruitment consultant, from Willesden, North London, added: “The flight attendants came running down the aisle and tried to calm him down. It was very scary. He looked very dazed or drunk.”
She explained the incident happened six hours into the eight hour flight and the man was among a group of cricketers wearing the blue Sri Lankan polo-shirt with their country's name in yellow lettering.
She heard him tell cabin crew aboard the Boeing 777 carrying 229 passengers that he had been looking for the toilet.
A British Airways spokesman said: “During the flight a man got up and tried to go to the toilet. But instead of going to the toilet he tried to open the aircraft door in midflight.
“The event was linked to an element of alcohol. He explained his mistake and cabin crew accepted it in good faith.”
BA stressed that it is impossible to open the pressurised door in mid-flight.
At Gatwick, the players boarded a flight for Sri Lanka.
Officials confirmed that the man was a Sri Lankan cricketer but declined to name him.

First of all you cant open that door while the flight is flying.

My suggestion is people should hav got together and beaten him on the spot so he would have done it in his pants before going to toilet.

But i think local media will give this unneccesary coverage. He should be given a fair chance like anybody else.
My expereince couple of months before, one guy got into the plane (Mihin) and kept the plane delayed for more than one hour extra. This guy was fully drunk and they handed him over to the authorities and we left without him. He was not behaving well with the flight attendances. This story didnt go beyond us and our family members and friends. Becoz we dont know that guy though he is sri lankan.

So i think this cricketer also in their own terms - "boys are boys...."

Im pretty sure that he knows very well what is toilet door and not. He must have definitely done it for sheer fun.

The whole episode was exaggerated by British and local media mainly because the man involved was a Sri Lankan cricketer or person wearing a SL T shirt.

Some of the local media fools even published " සිදුවීමට ගිය මහා අනතුරක් වලක්වා ගැනේ "

No one can open the cabin doors like that. Plane makers are not donkeys to fix doors like that. In mid air you cannot open it even after unlocking due to high cabin pressure.

Not only drunken , other passengers also try this kind of things by mistake or for fun. Those incidents are happening everyday.

If anyone behave dangerously they take legal actions after landing.

From tomorrow you will get more exiting news on this from opposition because the player's farther is a high rank politician in power.

The perception that aircraft doors cannot be opened while in flight is not totally correct.
All aircraft doors can be opened at lower altitudes, though it is not so easy task and some aircraft doors can be opened (if you know how to do it) even at high altitudes too with fatal consequences.

Anyone can disregard this as a simple incident, but the main actor in this event is well known for controversy during his school days, as an under 19 cracker.....now as a national cricket??? This is not the first and not will be last...??? Like father like son.......

at 35K no chance, the plane has to fly at lower altitudes to open and the pilot will need to auto unlock. Who is this guy by the way.

An exceptional person in my class was Mr. Amrith Jayawardene. A real decent boy,   his seeya was the most powerful JRJ . He never behaved like other low level notorious  MP's offspring.

Who is this guy by the way.
දැන් ඉතින් කවුරුත් දන්නා නිසා ලිව්වට කමක් නැහැ. රඹුක්වැල්ල  නම් A Team ක්‍රීඩකයෙක්. (as per the Cricket Board Announcement)

As for Young Jayawardane, I think it was because of his mother was a very pious lady and that quality may have influenced him greatly.

While claiming that his son is not alcoholic, Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella had said that he had sought the British Airways report to get his son's name cleared regarding the incident on a British Airways flight.

Minister Rambukwella said, "I have sought the report from the airlines. As far as I know, there is nothing abnormal in the airlines report. My son is not alcoholic. Only to sensationalize the issue, the media has made it a issue".

"The cabin door and the lavatory toilet were hardly few feet away and my son mistakenly tried to open the door. The pressurized cabin door is not openable".

"It is not the first time my son has traveled in the aircraft. He has been to many countries with the Sri Lankan team and he knows the etiquette and how to behave in the aircraft". (Bipini Dani)
