India to send back Sri Lanka Air Force personnel

Chennai, July 6 — Bowing to the political pressures exerted by the AIADMK government and the major opposition party DMK, the central government has decided to send back the Sri Lanka Air Force personnel who had come for training here.

"All Sri Lankan trainees are being sent off today (Friday) as per instruction of the ministry of defence," said a media statement issued by the government here Friday.

Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa and DMK leader M. Karunanidhi Thursday demanded the immediate expulsion of Sri Lanka Air Force personnel being trained near here in Tamil Nadu.

Jayalaltihaa had said this training was being given at a time when the Tamil Nadu assembly passed a resolution that India and other countries should impose economic sanctions against Colombo for committing war crimes.

"When the international community is raising its voice that India should urge Sri Lanka to accord equal rights to Tamils, the news of Sri Lanka Air Force personnel (coming) for nine months training at the Tambaram air force station (near here) is like piercing (our) heart with a spear," she had said.

She said the training and that too in Tamil Nadu "is not only inappropriate but also anti-Tamil". Former chief minister Karunanidhi also condemned the training and demanded the trainees to be sent back.

Tamil parties have accused the Sri Lankan military of committing atrocities on Tamil civilians during the final stages of the war against the separatist Tamil Tigers that ended in May 2009.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jayaram has slammed the Indian Government for allowing Sri Lankan Air Force (SLAF) personnel to be trained in Tambaram Airbase located in a suburb of Chennai in Tamil Nadu.

Chief Minister Jayalalitha, while condemning the Central Government of India for training the Sri Lanka Air Force personnel at Thambaram , Chennai, in a statement yesterday, urged the Indian Government to cancel the training programme.

However, the SLAF sources in Colombo said the training programme at Tambaram Airbase is a routine course for mid career officers.

Air Force Spokesperson Group Captain Andrew Wijesuriya told Ceylon Today; currently SLAF personnel are receiving technical training at the Thambarama Airbase.

“We have been receiving training in this Airbase for nearly 20 years and this has been a regular training course,” he said

Taking objection to the training being imparted to Sri Lankan Air Force personnel at an Indian Air Force base near Chennai, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalaithaa on Thursday, urged the Centre to immediately cancel the programme and send the personnel back to Sri Lanka.

“At a time when there are voices demanding equal status for Tamils in Sri Lanka, reports about Sri Lankan Air Force personnel receiving training at the Tambaram Air Force Base was something against the Tamils. I strongly condemn this,” she said in a statement yesterday in Chennai.

She slammed the Centre for remaining ‘silent’ on a resolution moved by the State assembly calling for economic sanctions against Sri Lanka, besides demanding equal status for Tamils in that country and said “It is an insult for the Tamil people that the Centre is imparting military training to the Air Force personnel from Sri Lanka.”

“While there are demands for sanction against those charged of war crimes, the fact that the Sri Lankan Air Force personnel are being trained in India is not only improper, but also against interests of Tamil people,” she said.

Jayalalitha in her statement went onto say that nine Air Force personnel are currently receiving training in Tambaram.

Under attack from all political parties, including ruling UPA key ally DMK, the Centre on Friday decided to “send off” the Sri Lankan airmen from the IAF station at Tambaram where they were undergoing training.

“All Sri Lankan trainees are being sent off today from this Station as per instruction of the Ministry of Defence,” a brief Defence Ministry statement said, a day after all political parties strongly protested training to nine Sri Lankan airmen here.

The training of the Lankan personnel by India came in the line of fire from political parties with Chief Minister Jayalalithaa describing it as an “insult to Tamil people” and others including her bitter rival, DMK, also joining in the chorus.

“At a time when there are voices demanding equal status for Tamils in Sri Lanka, reports about Sri Lankan Air force personnel receiving training at the Tambaram Air force station near here has come as a shock to the Tamil people. I strongly condemn this,” Ms. Jayalalithaa had said in a strongly-worded statement on Thursday.

DMK president M Karunanidhi and MDMK founder Vaiko said it was “condemnable” and demanded that they be sent back.(The Hindu)

Earlier, Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa’s demand for putting an end to Indian Air Force base at Tambaram, Chennai training Sri Lankan air force personnel had triggered political reverberations, with Union shipping minister G K Vasan supporting the AIADMK leader’s line.

Vasan said on Friday that the ongoing training of Sri Lankan troops at the Tambaram air base is a matter of concern. “It is a matter of concern, considering the cruelties faced by Tamils in Lanka,” Vasan said while inaugurating a vessel traffic management system at Chennai port.

He said he strongly disagreed with the decision to train Lankan personnel and that he has taken up the matter with Union ministers concerned. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president B S Gnanadesikan will officially convey the state Congress unit’s protest against the training, Vasan said.

Earlier, MDMK had expressed its protest against the training being imparted to Sri Lankan personnel, PTI reports.

Did the Indian central government or Tamilnadu government discussed with SL regarding safety issues arising as a result of their proposed nuclear power station. Did they forget that their beloved Sri Lankan tamil people in north can affect the most in case of a disaster?.
Have Tamilnadu politicians passed a resolution to expedite the 50 000 houses that promised by their central government for the Tamil people affected by war ?

Sri lanka govenment ask all event orgenises to put a hefty compansation clause in event cacelation for indian artist. other wise this cant be go on. Govenment must monitor this as this give bad publicity to the country.

Indian Gov is under severe pressure by Tamil Nadu , so Govt will not go against Tamilnadu and do in favor of SL , will put lots of barriers in future for sure. so drop india little by little , cut off imports & be with Giants....

But US and West are closely working with India.. when you take the next world powers, India and China, Indian political system is very much similar to these countries. whereas china is said to be a socialist country without an opposition.
So it is difficult to ignore India and to close with US and EU..
