Power cuts to be imposed in certain areas

Due to a breakdown at Lakvijaya Coal Power Plant in Norochcholai and Kerawalapitiya Power Plant there is a shortfall of 400 MW, says the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).

Hence power cuts will be imposed in several areas from tomorrow (22), until operations at the power plants are restored, for around two hours in the morning and evening, CEB Chairman Wimaladharma Abhayawickrema stated.

CEB issues power cut schedule

Power cuts will be imposed in Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte, Dehiwala, Pannipitiya, Aturugiriya, Panadura and Kelaniya area from tomorrow (24), the Ceylon Electricity Board said.

හෙට (24) සිට ක්‍රියාත්මක වන පරිදි දිනකට පැය 3ක විදුලි කප්පාදුවක් කිරීමට තීරණය කර ඇතැයි විදුලිබල හා බලශක්ති අමාත්‍යංශය පවසයි.

ඒ අනුව දිවයිනේ බොහෝ ප්‍රදේශවලට හෙට උදෑසන 8.30 සිට සවස 5.30 අතර කාලයේ පැය 2 යි විනාඩි 15 ක කාලයක් සහ රාත්‍රී 6.30 - රාත්‍රී 9.30 අතර කාලයේ විනාඩි 45 ක කාලයක් විදුලිය කප්පාදු කිරීමට තීරණය කර ඇති බව එම අමාත්‍යංශය සඳහන් කරයි.

මෙම විදුලි කප්පාදුව ලබන අඩුම තරමින් ලබන 28 වන දින තෙක් ක්‍රියාත්මක කිරිමට සිදුවන බවද විදුලිබල හා බලශක්ති අමාත්‍යංශය නිකුත් කළ නිවේදනයක දැක්වෙයි.

එම නිවේදනයට අනුව හෙට (24) කාණ්ඩ 04 ක් යටතේ, උපරිම පැය 2 යි විනාඩි 15 කට යටත්ව, පෙරවරු 8.30 – 10.45 අතර කාලයේ, පෙ.ව 10.45 - ප.ව 1.00 කාලයේ, ප.ව 1.00 - ප.ව. 3.15 අතර කාලයේ සහ ප.ව 3.15 සිට ප.ව 5.30 අතර කාලයේ විදුලිය විසන්ධි කෙරේ. ඒ අනුව අනුරාධපුර, හබරණ, වවුනියාව, තුල්හිරිය, පන්නල, බෝලවත්ත, පුත්තලම, කුරුණෑගල, හලාවත, මාදම්පේ, අම්පාර, ත්‍රිකුණාමලය, බියගම, කටුනායක, කොස්ගම, කැළණිය, ආනියාකන්ද, වේයන්ගොඩ, අතුරුගිරිය, පන්නිපිටිය, සීතාවක, ඇඹිලිපිටිය, බදුල්ල, නුවරඑළිය, රන්ටැඹේ, අම්බලන්ගොඩ, දෙනියාය, ගාල්ල, මාතර, මතුගම, පානදුර, කිරිබත්කුඹුර, හොරණ, පානදුර, ශ්‍රී ජයවර්ධනපුර කෝට්ටේ, දෙහිවල, වාලච්චේන, කොටුගොඩ, සපුගස්කන්ද, අම්බලන්ගොඩ, උකුවෙල, විමලසුරේන්ද්‍ර, හම්බන්තොට, ඛෙලිඅත්ත, රත්මලාන යන ප්‍රදේශවල සහ ඒ අවට ග්‍රාමයන්ගේ විදුලිය විසන්ධි කරන බව ලංවිම අවධාරණය කරයි.

එම එක් එක් කාණ්ඩ වලට පිළිවෙලින් සවස 6.30 – 7.15 අතර කාලයේත්,7.15 – 8.00 අතර කාලයේත් 8.00 – 8.45 අතර කාලයේත්, 8.45 – 9.30 අතර කාලයේත් විදුලිය විනාඩි 45 කට විසන්ධි කිරීමට සිදුවන බව ලංවිම සභාපති මහාචාර්ය විමලධර්ම අබේවික්‍රම මහතා අවධාරණය කරයි.

මේ පිළිබඳව කඩිනමින් නියෝජ්‍ය සාමාන්‍යාධිකාරී කාර්යාල හරහා සියළුම ප්‍රාදේශීය විදුලි ඉංජිනේරු කාර්යාල දැනුවත් කිරීමට කටයුතු කරන බව ලංකා විදුලිබල මණ්ඩලය පවසයි. ඒ අනුව හෙට උදෑසන 9.00 න් පසුව තම ප්‍රදේශයේ විදුලි බිඳවැටීම් පිළිබඳව ප්‍රදේශයේ විදුලි ඉංජිනේරු කාර්යාලයෙන් විස්තර ලබාගත හැකි බව ලංවිම පෙන්වා දෙයි. එමෙන්ම ලංවිම ක්ෂණික ඇමතුම් මධ්‍යස්ථානය - 1987 අංකය ඇමතීමෙන් මේ පිළිබඳව වැඩි විස්තර ලබාගත හැකි බව විදුලිබල මණ්ඩලයේ සභාපතිවරයා වැඩිදුරටත් අවධාරණය කරයි.

How does the power cut effect the market?

July 23, 2012 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's state-run Ceylon Electricity Board is expecting to repair a coal power plant in three days which can spell an end to electricity rationing which started Tuesday, the power ministry said.

Engineers had discovered a rupture in a steam tube heat at a exchanging device in the coal plant's boiler, the power ministry said in a statement.

The 300 MegaWatt coal plant generates about 20 percent of the daily demand of energy of about 30 GigaWatt hours (millions of units).

The base load Chinese built plant was expected to have 80 percent plant factor, but has been cutting out intermittently.

On Sunday and Monday, the CEB provided power running down its remaining hydro reserves to about 24 percent, amid one of the driest years in a decade.

Hydro plants are needed to maintain a night peak.

The CEB started three hour power cuts from today, ending more than 10 years of power supply with no official rationing.

The two damaged power plants – Lakvijaya Coal Power Plant (LCPP) at Norochcholai and the Combined Cycle Power Plant (CCPP) at Kerawalapitiya -- will be fully repaired by Friday and power generation would resume with the supply of 400 MWs to the national grid, CEB chairman Wimalachandra Abeywickreme said.

The Puttalam Lakvijaya plant will add 300MW of power to the national grid tonight (July 26). Power cuts affecting several areas will be discontinuedas a result tonight, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) stated.

July 26, 2012 (LBO) - Sri Lanka has repaired an breakdown-prone Chinese built 300 MegaWatt coal plant allowing the state-run Ceylon Electricity Board end to power cuts, the power ministry said.

The CEB has provided continuous power with no official power cut for more than 10 years until the Chinese plant went down.

The power ministry said a 100MW steam section of a 270 MW combined cycle would also be connected to the grid over the weekend.

CEB said the high pressure steam tube in the coal plant which had ruptured had now been repaired and the coal plant had been fired. The plant had been prone to breakdowns.
