Profit taking was evident throughout the day with many blue-chips losing ground. Retail activity remained subdued with low volumes and turnover. LOLC and Touchwood Investments remained active in today’s trading. It is noteworthy mentioning that net foreign buying was much lower than during the past week.

ASI dropped by 35.76 points (0.6%) to close at 5,928.53, MPI lost 55.79 points (0.99%) to close at 5,576.74 and the S&P SL 20 Index lost 14.21 points (0.44%) to close at 3,222.40. Turnover was Rs. 748.4Mn.

Top contributors to turnover were Touchwood Investments with Rs. 114.7Mn, LOLC with Rs. 105.7Mn and Royal Ceramics with Rs. 36.0Mn. Most active counters for the day were Touchwood Investments, Swarnamahal Financial Services and Central Investments and Finance.

Notable gainers for the day were LB Finance up by 8.7% to close at Rs. 163.00, Radient Gems up by 6.7% to close at Rs. 81.10 and Oversees Realty up by 4.9% to close at Rs. 14.90. Notable losers for the day were York Arcade down by 7.9% to close at Rs. 21.00, Dunamis Capital down by 7.1% to close at Rs. 13.10 and E.B. Creasy down by 6.7% to close at Rs. 1,120.00.

Cash map for today was a disappointing 36.71% although it improved from around 27%. Foreign participation was 10.6% of total market turnover and net foreign buying stood at Rs. 24.5Mn.

Reuters: Stocks ended weaker on Tuesday for a second straight session as investors booked profits from an overbought market, while the rupee slipped from a more than four-month high.

The Colombo Stock Exchange’s main index dropped 0.6% or 35.76 points to close at 5,928.53.

The exchange has been overbought since 28 August, Thomson Reuters data shows. The 14-day Relative Strength Index on Monday was at 79.582, above the upper neutral range of 70.

Turnover on Tuesday was Rs. 747.9 million ($ 5.79 million), less than this year’s daily average of Rs. 953 million.

The Bourse saw a net foreign inflow of Rs. 24.5 million, extending the net foreign inflow so far this year to Rs. 31.62 billion.

The rupee closed slightly weaker at 129.29/35 to the dollar compared with Monday’s close of 129.10/15, on importer dollar demand, dealers said.
