October 12, 2012 (LBO) – Sri Lanka stocks ended a streak of losses and closed up 0.30 percent Friday.

The Colombo All Share Index closed at 5,738.24 up 17.38 points and the S & P SL 20 Index closed 5.62 points higher at 3,098.42 up 0.18 percent.

Turnover was 475 million rupees. Top contributors to turnover were JKH with 100 million rupees, Distilleries with 47 million rupees and Commercial Bank (NV) with 44 million rupees.

Aitken Spence PLC slipped 0.30 cents to close at 131.70 rupees down 0.23 percent. AVIVA NDB Insurance PLC gained 5.10 rupees to close at 370.20 rupees up 1.40 percent.

Commercial Bank slipped 0.90 cents to close at 110.20 rupees down 0.81 percent. DFCC Bank slipped 1.50 rupees to close at 114.00 rupees down 1.30 percent. Hatton National Bank gained 0.70 cents to close at 112.70 rupees up 0.63 percent.

Dialog Axiata PLC closed flat at 8.50 rupees.

Index heavy John Keells Holdings PLC gained 1.90 rupees to close at 205.40 rupees up 0.93 percent.

The All Share Price Index gained 17.4 points to close at 5,738.2 (+0.3%), whilst the more liquid Milanka Price Index also gained 30.7 points to close at 5,260.1 (+0.6%). Furthermore the newly introduced S&P SL20 Index gained marginally to close at 3,098.4 (+0.2%).

The total turnover was LKR475.3 mn (USD3,696.3k) vs. 12-month average daily turnover of LKR99.9 mn (USD7,348.8k) whilst the volume traded for the day was 23,496.2k against the 12-month average daily volume of 42,220.2k.

Top traded counters were John Keells Holding sold in H LKR100.3 mn (USD1,093.3k, +0.7%), Distilleries LKR47.7 mn (USD422.4k, +1.1%), Commercial Bank( non-voting) LKR43.6 mn (USD122.7k, 0.0%), Renuka Agri Foods LKR41.7 mn (USD77.2k, -1.0%) and Commercial Bank LKR35.0 mn (USD64.3k, -1.0%).

Colombo bourse saw a change in its trajectory where it saw all three indices gaining during the day after four consecutive days of downturn. John Keells Holdings emerged as the top revenue generator for the day on the back of institutional and high net worth investor interest contributing for c.20% of the day’s turnover. Further, the counter saw 245k shares changing hands. Distilleries and Commercial Bank both voting and non-voting saw institutional participation whilst renewed widespread activity was evident in Renuka Agri Foods during the day.

A net outflow of foreign funds was seen during the day, where foreign purchases amounted to LKR99.9 mn (USD776.8k), whilst foreign sales amounted to LKR137.9 mn (USD1,072.4k).
