Jun 27, 2013 (LBT) - Bourse recovered to green territory: The bourse endured a high volatile day today. ASPI dipped notably during mid-day trading and recovered on a similar magnitude in the latter part of the day ending green at 6,111.36 with a gain of 39 points. Gains recorded on Ceylon Tobacco Company (+1.0%), John Keells Holdings (+0.8%) and Dialog Axiata (+2.4%) weighted positively on the overall index performances.

JKH led the day’s turnover; John Keells Holdings spearheaded turnover contributing 50% to the daily-turnover supported by two off-board transactions totaling 2.6mn shares which were transacted at LKR247.0. JKH closed with low activity at LKR251.3 with a gain of 0.8%. Commercial Bank too recorded a single crossing amounting to 1.1mn which was dealt at LKR115.0. Sampath Bank, Ceylon Tobacco Company, Lion Brewery and Lanka Floortiles denoted some off-board interest during the day.

SAMP and NDB gain investor interest: The BFI sector counters; Sampath Bank and National Development Bank displayed significant on-board interest during the day. SAMP recorded a single on-board transaction amounting to 66k shares which was traded at LKR204.0. The counter closed at LKR204.7 with a marginal dip of 0.2%. NDB too settled with a marginal of 0.2% at LKR162.3.

Retail Interest on Touchwood: Retail favorites Touchwood Investments, Central Investments and Finance and Chilaw Finance attracted notable investor interest during the day. TWOD ended the day at LKR4.9 with a gain of 6.5%.

Colombo Bourse advanced on Thursday, snapping a four-day losing streak. ASI gained 38.68 points (+0.6%) to 6,111.36 supported by price appreciations in index heavy counters such as Ceylon Tobacco (LKR 993.50,+1.4%), John Keells Holdings (LKR 251.00,+0.7%), Dialog Axiata (LKR 8.60,+2.4%) and Lion Brewery (LKR 415.00,+3.8%). S&P SL 20 index closed at 3,426.48, up by 12.85 points (+0.4%). Gainers outweighed the losers 140 to 57.

Market turnover was LKR 1.3bn. John Keells Holdings emerged as the top contributor with a turnover of LKR 651mn out of which LKR 643mn came from crossings of 2.6mn shares at a price of LKR 247.00 per share. Foreigners were on the selling side today and net foreign outflow in JKH amounted to c.LKR 647mn. The stock closed at LKR 251.00,+0.7%.

Other notable contributions to the turnover were made by Sampath Bank (LKR 133mn) and Commercial Bank (LKR 132mn). Sampath Bank closed at LKR 204.50,-0.2% and Commercial Bank closed at LKR 114.90,+1.3%.

Moreover 1.6mn shares of Commercial Bank at LKR 115.00 per share, 0.5mn shares of Sampath Bank at LKR 205.00, 0.3mn shares of Lanka Tiles at LKR 80.00 per share and 79,791 shares of Ceylon Tobacco at LKR 1,000.00 per share and 66,800 shares of Lion Brewery at LKR 415.00 changed hands in several crossings. The crossings accounted for 77% of the market turnover.

Retail activity was seen in counters such as Touchwood Investments (LKR 5.00,+8.7%), Central Investments & Finance (LKR 2.00,+25%) and Chilaw Finance (LKR 13.20,+4.8%). Cashmap was at 54.4%.

Foreigners were net sellers for the fourth consecutive day and net outflow amounted to LKR 497mn. Foreign participation accounted for 53% of the market activity. Net foreign buying was seen in counters such as Sampath Bank (LKR 114mn) and Lanka Floortiles (LKR 35mn) while net foreign selling was seen in counters such as John Keells Holdings (LKR 647mn) and Aitken Spence (LKR 3mn).
