China strongly supports Sri Lanka’s endeavours in protecting sovereignty, territorial integrity, stability and in pursuing development, said Chinese Ambassador Wu Jianghao.
In a special speech at the Chinese Embassy in Colombo yesterday on President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s State visit to China and the development of bilateral relations for the future, the Ambassador stated that this visit marked a new chapter between the two countries.
He highlighted three important occasions in the President’s visit. The first being, China and Sri Lanka relations, secondly opening a new platform for economic and trade cooperation and thirdly strengthening people to people contacts, exchanges and cooperation in education, culture, religion, media and contacts between civil groups and academic institutions.
The Ambassador said that both countries were keen to establish a Strategic Cooperation Partnership explaining it as “a high level position of Chinese diplomacy.” He said it would help to cultivate sincere and mutual assistance and everlasting friendship, mutual political trust and deepened pragmatic cooperation.
He said that both countries would set up a trade work team and an economic work team within the framework of China - Sri Lanka Joint Committee for Economic and Trade Cooperation, to carry out research on measures of facilitating trade, investment and financing cooperation and moving bilateral trade towards a greater balance. He said the Chinese Government would continue to support infrastructure development in Sri Lanka, while encouraging competent Chinese companies to invest in Sri Lanka and cooperation between private sectors. He said attention had been given to increase exports from Sri Lanka to China and the number of Chinese tourists to Sri Lanka.
He further said that China was willing to consider to an increase in scholarships granted to Sri Lankan students to study in China. He also said the Embassy was looking forward to establish a Chinese Cultural Center in Sri Lanka.
He stated that China was keen to deepen defense cooperation, by facilitating frequent mutual visits by military officials, the cooperation in military exercises, personnel training, defense related science and technology, academy management and logistics support, etc.
Responding to a question by a journalist, the Ambassador also remarked that China had no hidden agenda in assisting Sri Lanka, but its targets were open and beneficial to both countries.
President Rajapaksa during his visit to China from May 27 – 30, held bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier of the State Council Li Keqiang and Vice President of China Li Yuanchao.
He attended and addressed the Global Services Forum - Beijing Summit and the 2013 International Conference of Asian Political Parties(ICAPP) Special Conference to “Promote Green Development & Build a Beautiful Asia Together.”
The Ambassador began his address by saying that President Rajapaksa depicted his greater understanding and thorough knowledge on the current global context and that he directed the country with great wisdom. The Ambassador remarked that this visit was one of the most successful state visits by any foreign leader to China, adding that it led to many bilateral agreements between the two countries.
