Stock market regained ground, with the ASI recovering 0.21% (up by 12.63 points) to settle at 6,142.87. S&P SL 20 Index gained marginally by 1.78 points (+0.05%) and end at 3,453.23.

The interim results released by several companies today showed impressive earnings growth where Hatton National Bank reported a growth of 27%YOY and Lanka IOC 603%YoY. Lanka IOC was among the mostly traded stocks (up by 7.3%) after Textured Jersey (down by 1.4%) and Access Engineering (4.7%) which reached 52 week high prices with heavy trading during the day. Meanwhile nearly 40 stocks reached 52 week low prices.

Market turnover was LKR 403mn. John Keells Holdings with LKR 100mn, Access Engineering with LKR 63mn and Lion Brewery with LKR 31mn were the top contributors to the daily turnover. 126,000 shares of John Keells Holdings changed hands as a single crossing at a price of LKR 260.00 per share.

Foreign participation accounted for 25% of the total market activity and foreign investors were net sellers with a net outflow of LKR 72mn.

Cash map closed at 50%.

Some retail activity was evident on the Colombo bourse yesterday with play in Access Engineering, Textured Jersey and Lanka Indian Oil Corporation, brokers said.

Both indices were up with the All Share Price Index gaining 12.63 points (0.21%) while S&P SL20 gained a marginal 1.78 points (0.05%) on a turnover of Rs.403 million, up from the previous day’s Rs.328.5 million, with 92 gainers slightly behind 98 losers while 123 counters closed flat.

Foreign selling amounted to Rs. 136.4 million, leading to a net outflow of Rs. 71.96 million.

``Strong gains in large cap power & energy and construction & engineering counters pushed the ASPI higher. Activity levels improved slightly and were dominated by trades on JKH and AEL, which collectively accounted for roughly 40% of the day’s turnover, inclusive of a block trade on JKH," John Keells Stock Brokers said in a market report.

Foreign selling outpaced buying leading to a net outflow of Rs. 71.97 million with sales of Rs. 136.41 million and purchases of Rs. 64.45 million.

One crossing of 126,000 JKH in a single block at a price of Rs.260 per share generating Rs.32.8 million turnovers was posted.

On the trading floor, JKH which closed Rs.1.30 down at Rs.261 with nearly 0.3 million shares done between Rs.260 and Rs.263 contributing Rs.66.9 million to turnover was the single biggest business generator.

While this was the most traded stock in value terms, brokers noted that it has been edging down in recent days although buying interest is seen.

Access Engineering saw over 2.8 million shares done between Rs.21.80 and Rs.22.60 closing a rupee up at Rs.22.40 contributing Rs.62.8 million to turnover. Brokers noted that this counter which touched its 52-week high of Rs.22.60 in intraday trading was attracting considerable retail play.

``The counter has been moving up in recent days,’’ a broker said.

LIOC, the third biggest contributor to turnover yesterday, closed Rs.1.90 up at Rs.28 on 1.1 million shares traded between Rs.27 and Rs.28.40 contributing Rs.30.9 million to turnover. Brokers said its share price had moved up with the latest published results.

Textured Jersey closed 20 cents down at Rs.14.40 on over 1.4 million shares done between Rs.14.30 and Rs.15 contributing Rs.21.1 million to turnover with the share touching its 52-week high of Rs.15 during the day’s trading.

Other counters that demonstrated volume included Vallibel Power closing 10 cents up at Rs.6.50 on nearly 2.2 million shares, Hemas Holdings up one rupee to close at Rs.33.60 on nearly 0.4 million shares and People’s Leasing closing flat at Rs.14.40 on nearly 0.6 million shares.

Banking stocks among the most traded counters included Sampath up Rs.2.30 to Rs.196 on 52,572 shares, Commercial Bank up 30 cents to Rs.119.30 on 536,686 shares and HNB up Rs.1.50 to Rs.154.50 on 43,478 shares.

Samson International announced a first and final dividend of Rs.2 per share for 2012/13 XD from Aug. 22 and with payment on Sept. 3.

Aug 13, 2013 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's stocks closed up 0.21 percent Tuesday following with losses in the last few days with gains seen in the large cap stocks, brokers said.

The benchmark Colombo All Share Index closed 12.63 points higher at 6,142.87 and the S&P SL 20 Index closed 7.88 points higher at 3,459.33 up 0.23 percent. 6,142.8712.630.21%

Turnover was 403 million rupees up from 372 million Monday with over 23 million shares traded in a day that 83 stocks advanced and 93 stocks declined.

Asian Hotels Properties contributed most to the index closing at72.50 rupees up 2.50 rupees and Lanka IOC closed at closed at 27.90 rupees up 6.90 rupees.

Negative contributors were John Keells Holdings closing at 260.60 rupees down 2.30 rupees and Carsons and Cumberbatch closing at 391.00 down 5.00 rupees.

Dipped Products closed at 109.90 up 2.90 rupees.

Sri Lanka's President Mahinda Rajapaksa has directed that the factory belonging to Dipped Products Plc, a unit of Sri Lanka's Hayleys group be relocated and all factories in the future to be built in industrial zones, his media office said.
