As predicted by the senior Indian diplomat Badrakumar, in the long term, Sirisena’s policies are closer to Mahinda than the UNP. What lies underneath the popular budget is not Royal College thinking but Maxim Gorky thinking of Sirisena. The Port City Chinese project was resolved the way Sirisena wanted, not the UNP way. Removing military camps as demanded by sections of the UNP will not be happening and IMF terms are rejected based on pro-China policies of Sirisena. Dismantling the Rajapaksa administration was the easy part of the Sirisena-Chandrika-Ranil coalition. Policy congruency in governance is the difficult part.
UNP has come up with a clumsy excuse to disrupt the 100-day program. John Amaratunga, true to his history of violence and abuse, has brought back thuggery into politics. As a result he is now facing a no confidence motion. It is likely to go through as the UPFA has the majority. However, it is no excuse for UNP to disrupt the 100-day program. Now Ranil Wickramasinghe has pleaded the president to dissolve the parliament even before most election promises are met! This is outright dishonesty on the part of the UNP and must not be allowed to get away with it. Tactfully UPFA should support the 100-day program without the UNP. It has sufficient clout to do so.
People voted for the 100-day program along with good governance. Assaulting the local governance body Chairman in Wattala is certainly no good governance. John Amaratunga must be in jail for his hand in this crime. New government’s impotency is there for all to see when no action is taken against him. As such it is no different to the old. The UPFA has done the right thing by bringing a no confidence motion against him. He should be removed from parliament and preferably from the civil society too.
