The Water Supply and Drainage Board says that its workers will be paid an interim allowance of 20% until their salary is increased for 2015.

Water Supply and Drainage Board Director of Operation Mahilal Silva told our news team that the interim allowance has been deposited to each worker’s private bank account.

However workers attached to the Water Supply and Drainage Board are refusing the interim allowance.

They demand that the relevant annual salary increment should be paid immediately.hiru news

The 5000 increment has been added to the COL allowance. Not to the basic salary.

The Water Resources Joint Trade Union Alliance says that they will work out a four hour strike action in the Central Province.

Convener engineer Upali Ratnayake said that the aim of their strike action is to protest against the non-implementation of salary increments of employees of the Water Supply and Drainage Board.

He added that the salary increments which were to be given once every three years were due in January, and that it has not been granted as yet.

The convener noted that they were to hold a discussion with the subject minister. However, the minister had not turned up for discussions, disregarding the trade unions.

When contacted, General Manager of the Water Supply and Drainage Board Ranjith Balasuriya said that they are holding discussions with the Ministry of Finance with the regard to the salary increment.

He added as a temporary solution workers will, on Tuesday, be given a 20% salary increment.
