No doubt that 2015 budget aims to control import bill which has become a burden to reconcile income & expenditure.

EV technology initiated decades back with a view to-

-Environmental protection with no tailpipe emissions that reduce the amount of carbon       dioxide.

-Burden on heavy & excessive fuel cost particularly in developing countries with ever
   increasing traffic congestion.

-Consumer is given an opportunity to have low cost car with new technology.

Rs 2.5m increase of electric car (EV) by introducing tax is very controversial. On what grounds this policy is taken?

Does anyone have the real evaluation of the cost per km considering the high cost payable for electricity which will continue to rise as fuel prices and vat charges increase.

Did you also notice a fleet of these cars were brought down a day before the budget by vibrant seller's and that is an indication that it was well planned and will be sold with a heavy margin.

100% agreed with you.

Every where in the world all government is promoting the use of hybrid car and solar and wind energy to avoid environment pollution. Infact world environment meeting takes place at the UN this very week.

How could then Sri Lanka do this cruel tax increase and do not care about the environment?

I strongly believe that some car companies / petroleum companies ( including the indian firms ) must have lobbied heavily with these ministers .

It looks very crazy.

Where are those media people and peace loving environmentalist?

Please show your protest to reverse this policy getting implemented.

Electric cars are not viable IF they get power from national grid where power is obtained by burning of imported fuel.
The industry was beginning to convert to solar by establishing solar powered charging centers. For that, there should be enough cars.
Solar panels generate power using radiation. Hence even with moderate cloud cover they produce power because radiation can penetrate the cloud barrier.

Yes, that man has also made a hilarious comment justifying the well planned huge tax increase !
His comment: " Solar power charged electric cars do not contribute anything to the National income (via electricity board). So  they are useless in that sense, to be taxed heavily. "
These are the people who guide or influence  policy makers.

Fleas are still everywhere like cancer grows.

Solar power can provide the energy for mobility with no arduous conditions. As said, use of national grid do would not meet objectives of innovations.

Former petroleum minister (Ranawaka) was an ardent supporter for EVs & setting up required infrastructure. Environmentalists are the stalwarts who can raise the issue for re-consideration.

Looks like Ravi is a big thieve so definitely they have imported dozens of cars before this tax impose. I also heard lot of electric cars imported recently.
Most of the countries are giving much priority to fuel saving cars. But sri lanka is against on it. Its because of some ministers benefit.

Hi teller it is known from your past articles that you are a strong supporter of former Rajapakshe family run government.

any government some times makes mistake in their policy decisions.

it is up to the educated people of the country to show their opposition towards these policies .

it is not late yet . this policy change can be reversed if people and media can get together.

however majority of the people will not get affected by this increase out of the total population.
may be 0.01 to 0.05 percentage of people ( by the way  who could afford ) may be have to face this tax increase ?.

I am sure Ranil Wickramasinghe who is a Royalist will listen if people make their views known.

This is what happen to Hybrid cars couple of years ago.
Introduced at 3m and suddenly imposed 50% tax and went to 4.5m .

for 3m this was a superb deal not because of the saving you get using Electricity (which is very small) but because of the facilities it has where you do not have such a car at this price.

Some how I would say this is a good car at 4.2 to 4.5 when compare with other vehicles in same range but not 5.5m for sure. in 6 months time people will start to buy and i hope Ravi will reduce this tax to 30%-40% range to make this a viable deal before the budget get approved.

Exactly same thing did by Mahindas regime to Hybrid cars to earn revenue.

all the other cars are above 100%import  tax. then electrics at a 50% is still  a bargain.petrol car users are paying indirect taxes when they pump petrol. so charging 50% one time import tax is very reasonable . the electric car price will come down soon . even today japanes auction prices seen coming down. new economy models of electric cars may come to the market.
