Sri Lanka's Tokyo Cement Company (Lanka)PLC will be setting up a 6MW Dendro Power plant with an investment of Rs. 1.5 billion in Mahiyangana through its subsidiary Tokyo Cement Power (Lanka) Ltd to sell electricity to the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).
Tokyo Cement operates a 10 MW capacity bio mas power plant at Trincomalee set up in 2008 with an investment of Rs. 2.4 billion. Excess electricity from this power plant is being provided to the CEB and it is connected to the island's national grid.
The new Dendro power plant will supply net electricity generation of 5 MW to the CEB, said E. Kugapriya, Power & Renewable Energy General Manager of the company He revealed that Tokyo Cement Power (Lanka) Ltd has gained the status of small scale power producer due its continuous supply of electricity to the CEB from its Trincomalee 10 MW bio mass power plant since 2008.
The decision to set up the new Dendro Power plant was taken by considering the Government’s initiative towards renewable energy and encouragement for greater private sector participation in power generation. The company will bring down the required power generators from India he said.
This bio mass dendro power generating project will be located on a 2.5 hectares of land close to the Mahaweli River at Anguruwagala village, Bathalayaya, at Mahiyangana. Construction work of the plant will be completed in 18 months and the plant will be ommissioned in 2013, he added. The clearing of land to make way for the power plant is now under way, he said.
