Speculative trading in Touchwood & CIFL

The Colombo bourse was yesterday unable to sustain Tuesday’s gains with both indices losing slightly although JKH which continued to dominate activity gained a further Rs.3.10 to close at Rs.224, brokers said.

The All Share Price Index lost 8.82 points (0.27%) and S&P SL20 was down 8.82 points (0.27%) on a turnover of Rs.582.8 million, down from the previous day’s Rs.816.9 million, with 93 gainers outpaced by 108 losers while 111 counters closed flat.

"Activity was mainly on JKH where there were two crossings of 325,000 shares at a price of Rs.223 per share in deals worth Rs.72.5 million. Nearly 0.9 million more shares were done on the floor at prices ranging from Rs.221 to Rs.224 contributing Rs.194.1 million to turnover,’’ a broker said.

Brokers said that there were no big blocks on the floor trades indicating either some retail play or big buyers mopping up whatever was available.

"We will know when the foreign participation figures are in," he said.

``The ASPI ended lower amid a slight drop in activity levels,’’ John Keells Stock Brokers said in a market report. ``Trades on JKH accounted for roughly 45% of market turnover, inclusive of two block trades."

Touchwood continued to be heavily traded to close 20 cents up at Rs.3.30 on nearly 27.1 million shares done between Rs.3.10 and Rs.4.70 contributing Rs.96.1 million to turnover. Brokers said that speculators were very active in this share.

Similarly Central Investment and Finance limited (CIFL) saw nearly 18.8 million shares done in speculative trading closing 10 cents up at Rs.1.30 trading between Rs.1.10 and Rs.1.50 generating a turnover of Rs.25.9 million.

Dimo closed Rs.5 up at Rs.480 on 32,405 shares and Distilleries Rs.3.50 up at Rs.185 on 64,698 shares.

Other stocks demonstrating volume included Vallibel Power down 10 cents to close at Rs.5.80 on over 3.4 million shares, Tokyo (voting) closing 10 cents down at Rs.23.50 on 0.5 million shares, Asiri up 40 cents to close at Rs.15 on over 0.7 million shares, Renuka Holdings down Rs.1.40 to Rs.29.20 on nearly 0.2 million shares and Dankotuwa down 10 cents to Rs.13.40 on nearly 0.4 million shares.
