COLOMBO, Oct 4 (Reuters) - Sri Lankan stocks rose to a more than five-week high on Friday as investors bought blue-chips like John Keells Holding PLC, but negative retail sentiment due to the U.S. shutdown hit turnover, brokers said.

The main share index rose 0.4 percent, or 23.15 points, to close at 5,837.95, its highest since Aug. 27.

Shares in conglomerate John Keells Holding PLC rose 1.26 percent to 216.50 rupees while market heavyweight Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC rose 1.35 percent to 1,054 rupees in thin trade.

Foreign investors were net sellers on Friday for the first time in 12 sessions. They sold 27.5 million rupees ($209,200) worth of shares. They have been net buyers of 20.46 billion rupees this year.

The day's turnover was 622.2 million rupees, well below this year's daily average of about 877 million rupees.

The Colombo bourse yesterday posted a modest turnover of Rs.622.2 million, down from the previous day’s Rs.840.8, with both indices up – the All Share by 23.15 points (0.40%) and S&P SL20 by 11.08 points (0.34%) with 121 gainers comfortably ahead of 88 losers while 104 counters closed flat.

"Price movement in penny stocks boosted retail participation in speculative trading," a broker said. "Blue chips like Guardian and JKH also posted good price gains."

JKH, however, which held the spotlight for the past several days saw modest volume with less than 0.1 million shares traded. Trading was initially dull and the price down but the counter later picked up closing Rs.5.70 up at Rs.219.50 on 86,957 shares done between Rs.212 and Rs.220 contributing Rs.18.7 million to turnover.

"The ASPI recovered from marginal intraday losses to end higher. The market continued to see higher retail participation, with trades on GUAR, BLUE, and TWOD accounting for over 30% of turnover. The market also saw crossings on LIOC and NEST," John Keells Stock Brokers said.

There was a foreign outflow of Rs. 27.51 mn. following inflows for several days with sales of Rs. 113.76 mn. ahead of purchases of Rs. 86.25 mn.

Block trades in Nestle where 23,000 shares were traded at a price of Rs.2,000 per share in a deal worth Rs.46 million and LIOC where a million shares were traded at Rs.25 contributing Rs.25 million to turnover were also recorded.

Ceylon Guardian saw an unusually large volume of 0.5 million shares traded between Rs.195 and Rs.205.90 closing Rs.5 up at Rs.204 contributing Rs.102.6 million to turnover which was the day’s highest on the floor.

Penny stocks which contributed to yesterday’s volumes included Blue Diamonds (voting) with nearly 14 million shares done closing 50 cents up at Rs.3.40; Touchwood closing 20 cents up at Rs.4.30 on over 9.4 million shares; PCH Holdings closing 10 cents up at Rs.1.50 on over 14.6 million shares; and Asia Siyaka Commodities closing 30 cents up at Rs.3.50 on over 3.1 million shares.

Access Engineering continued to demonstrate quantity closing 50 cents up at Rs.21.30 on 1.7 million shares.

Blue chips that showed quantity included Sampath closing 50 cents up at Rs.172 on nearly 0.2 million shares, HNB (voting) closing Re.1 up at Rs.151 on 0.1 million shares and Tokyo (voting) closing flat at Rs.24 on over 0.5 million shares.
