Oct 07, 2013 (LBO) - Sri Lanka stocks closed 0.50 percent higher on continued investor interest in tobacco and diversified stocks, and the rupee was steady against the dollar, brokers and dealers said.

The benchmark Colombo All Share Price Index closed 29.15 points higher at 5,867.10, up 0.50 percent, provisional data showed, after peaking at an intraday high of 5870.64.

The S&P SL20 closed 12.59 points higher at 3,244.38, up 0.39 percent.

Turnover amounted to Rs. 483.77 million rupees, down from Rs. 622.16 million rupees the previous day, with shares of 121 firms gaining and 57 losing.

Foreigners bought shares worth 243.14 million rupees, up from 86.25 million rupees the previous day, and sold shares worth 15.37 million rupees, down from 113.76 million rupees the previous day.

JKH closed 2.50 rupees higher at 219 rupees and featured in two crossings. Ceylon Tobacco closed 21.50 rupees higher at 1,075.50 rupees.

Lion Brewery closed 14.40 rupees higher at 374.90 rupees and Cargills Ceylon closed 5.00 rupees higher at 155.00 rupees.

Commercial Leasing and Finance closed 10 cents higher at 4.00 rupees.

Sri Lanka Telecom closed 70 cents lower at 38.60 rupees and Trans Asia Hotels closed 5.40 rupees lower at 84.50 rupees.

LOLC closed 1.00 rupee lower at 60.00 rupees and Commercial Bank closed 50 cents lower at 118.00 rupees.

Hayleys PLC closed 5.20 rupees lower at 290.30 rupees.

Troubled Touchwood closed 30 cents lower at 4.00 rupees and saw more than 5.9 million shares change hands.

HVA Foods closed 90 cents higher at 11.50 rupees and saw more than 1.79 million shares change hands.

Citrus Kalpitiya closed 20 cents higher at 6.50 rupees and saw more than 1.6 million shares change hands.

More than a million Blue Diamond shares were traded, closing 30 cents lower at 3.20 rupees.

The rupee was trading at 131.15/17 against the US dollar in late trading Monday in the spot market, unchanged from an opening position of 131.15/20.

Currency dealers said volumes were thin in the foreign exchange market with demand for US dollars matching supply.
The rupee traded at an intraday high of 131.10 against the US dollar.

A liquid five year Treasury bond was trading at yield of 11.66/68 percent, picking up from an opening position of 11.60/71 percent.

COLOMBO, Oct 7 (Reuters) - Sri Lankan stocks hit a more-than-five-week closing high on Monday as investors bought blue-chips like Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC and conglomerate John Keells Holding PLC, brokers said.

The main share index rose 0.5 percent, or 29.15 points, to close at 5,867.10, its highest since Aug. 27.

Shares in market heavyweight Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC rose 1.99 percent to 1,075.50 rupees, its highest close since Sept. 27, in thin trade, while conglomerate John Keells gained 1.15 percent to a five-week closing high of 219.00 rupees.

Foreign investors were net buyers of 227.8 million rupees ($1.73 million) worth of shares on Monday, extending the net buying so far this year to 20.69 billion rupees.

The day's turnover was 483.7 million rupees, well below this year's daily average of about 875 million rupees.

Oct 07, 2013 (LBT) - ASPI nearing a technical resistance at 5,900: The Colombo Bourse denoted a volatile behavior during the day where ASPI traded on a daily range of 28 points, reaching near a resistance at 5,900 and witnessed notable setback in the mid trading session followed by the early uptrend. However in late trading session ASPI regained and settled at 5,867.10 with gain of 29 points. Gains recorded in Ceylon Tobacco Company (+2.0%), John Keells Holdings (+1.2%) and Lion Brewery (+4.0%) weighed positively on the index. S&P SL 20 too closed with a gain of 13 points at 3,244.38.

JKH underlines daily-turnover: John Keells Holdings spearheaded the daily turnover with a 48% contribution supported by two off-board transactions accumulating to 293k shares which changed hands at LKR219.0. JKH displayed hefty on-board activity backed by two trades which added up to 375k shares at LKR219.0. The counter closed at LKR219.0 with an intra-day gain of 1.2%. AEL witnessed on-board interest: The fundamental counter, Access Engineering which trades at a trailing PER 7.2x, displayed on-board interest supported by three on-board transactions which accumulated to 450k shares at LKR21.4-21.5. The counter closed at LKR21.5 with a gain 2.4%

Retailers on an active spree: Retail shares were active throughout the day led by Touchwood investments, Colombo Land and Development and HVA Foods. TWOD led the turnover and activity level on the retail front, spearheading on-board order book with significant amounts of transactions. The counter ended the day at LKR4.0 with a dip of 7.0%. Colombo Land and Development further extended its speculative run backed by robust turnover reaching a peak at LKR48.0 and settling the day at LKR46.7 with an intra-day gain of 3.8%. HVA Foods too denoted a notable intra-day gain of 8.5% and closed at LKR11.50 surpassing a solid technical price pivot point at LKR11.0 with notable volume.
