THE TOTAL AREA TO BE RECLAIMED IS 200 hectares (500 acres approx).

THE FIRST PHASE IS THE RECLAMATION OF 250 acres. THE EIA CLEARANCE HAS ALREADY BEEN GIVEN.

IT IS HIGHLY LIKELY THAT THE SECOND PHASE (250 acres approx) TOO WOULD BE GIVEN THE GREEN LIGHT. THE MODEL STUDIES HAVE BEEN COMPLETED.

THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE PROJECT WILL BE AFTER THE ELECTIONS AND THE INSTALLATION OF THE NEW GOVT.

WHOEVER FORMS THE NEW GOVT THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT THE PROJECT IS SCHEDULED TO GO AHEAD.

COMPANY IN POSSESSION OF EXPERTISE & CUTTING EDGE TECHNOLOGY IN THE CONSTRUCTION & ENGINEERING SECTOR IS BOUND TO GREATLY BENEFIT FROM THIS PROJECT!COLOMBO PORT CITY - STATUS OF EIA Icon_biggrinCOLOMBO PORT CITY - STATUS OF EIA Icon_biggrinCOLOMBO PORT CITY - STATUS OF EIA Icon_biggrin

Lot of members when talking about this port city, only talking about the benefits for their share. What about the new Island (country) to be given to China. What about the Air space and sea space that will go to this island from Sir Lanka. Do you know that the map of Sri Lanka has to be changed if this goes as planned.

No air space , land or sea area to be given to China. This misinformation was created by politicians to attack previous Govt.

If we have money we can invest, build the new land and then sell to outsiders (99 Year ) like they do in other countries.

Chinese company invest money to build this land and they swap a part of land area instead of money.
The rest of the land is to be sold by Sri Lanka to any person from any country , China , USA, India etc. .

No one can fly or sail to his land avoiding Sri Lankan air traffic control , air defenses or naval regulations.

The extent of land (approx 80acres) is to be given on 99yrs lease. Air/Sea space will not be an issue as even the chinese have to enter crossing our Air/sea space.

Map of Sri Lanka will include this insignificant area (in comparison to the area of the country as of now)of 500 acres. What's the problem?

Exactly. This port city was used for media shows .now it is not valid. All the embassies are having more powers than this plot of land which is scheduled to be given.

I would like to suggest members to read the contract before commenting: For your information I quote the following and also I would like say that, during the inaugural session of the harbor expansion which belongs to Sri Lanka they did no allow to hoist our national flag. So what will happen to this after completion.

Quote:

Once the reclamation is completed, the land will be divided between the two countries. Sri Lanka’s share of the land will be125 hectares, and the balance 108 hectares will be the share of China, which consists of 20 hectares of land under outright ownership and the balance 98 hectares on a 99-year lease. It is also reported that out of the total reclaimed land, only 170 hectares will be used for commercial, business, and other income generating activities. The balance 63 hectares will be reserved for other purposes such as roads, parklands, and for recreational facilities. Information on how this land will be allocated between the two countries is unclear. If it is divided according to the land ownership, the share of the reduction of the land available for commercial use is 29 hectares for China and 34 hectares for Sri Lanka. Since the reserved land is a common property, both parties can use it.

Dear Mr.Tissera, The thread was initiated by me to address the EIA issue. However now that you have touched upon something connected to the project i wish to address that too with available information.

Subject Minister Arjuna in reply to a query stated the following in the parliament:

Quote:

WORK ON THE PORT CITY WILL BEGIN SOON, AS IT HAS NOT BEEN CANCELLED. A LEGAL ISSUE DID EXIST ON THE OWNERSHIP OF LAND, AS LAND COULD ONLY BE LEASED OUT ACCORDING TO THE LAW. THESE ISSUES WOULD BE RESOLVED SOON.

Unquote:

As it is, the land extent to be given to the Chinese is going to be solely on the basis of 99yrs lease in accordance with the law. Lot of things can happen during that space of time in this rapidly changing world.

Also you may have noticed that the initial noise made from the Chinese end when the project was halted has completely subsided. As a gesture of goodwill they partnered the Ranbhumi peace promotion rally as well. No doubt the relationship between the two countries are back again to an all time high with the inauguration of the extension of Southern Expressway by our President.

The project will get underway soon after the General Election, of course with amendments to the coc.COLOMBO PORT CITY - STATUS OF EIA Icon_biggrin

Dear Samaritan - Yes I agree with you. I wont say this is not good for the country. What I am saying saying is this should go ahead with proper approval from environment authorities and without giving any outright land ownership to China. In simple the project should be for the betterment of the country as a development project without damaging the integrity, sovereignty and environment as you said with major amendments to the contract agreement.

Ernie, you dont know about sri lanka, to get all approvals you need 100 years here because in government office file takes 2years to move to another table, i have done projects worth 100mn usd here and no project we proceeded with govet approval only we submitted docs for approval and then do the project and if needed we pay penalty
