Apr 02, 2012 (LBT) - The bourse showed every sign of lethargy to the start of the new financial year whilst the recent tax hike on motor vehicles resulted in stocks related to the motor sector taking a slash. The benchmark ASPI shed 21.50 points to close at 5,398 whilst the liquid MPI shed 2.63 points to close at 4,888. Total turnover for the day was over 694 mn (Approximately USD 5.4 million) Total volume traded was close to 67 mn shares.

The lone block trade was witnessed on GLAS as 45.3mn shares which is 5% of the issued capital changed hands at Rs.6.20. The counter closed the day at Rs.6 pumping over 41% of the day’s turnover. Interest continued on market heavyweight JKH as the counter contributed over 83mn towards the days tally. JKH closed the day at Rs.208.40 gaining marginally. Banking sector caps SAMP and NDB also witnessed interest from high net worth’s during the and traded attractive volumes. Illiquid cap DIPD continued to see volumes change hands at Rs.100.

Retailers were seen active during the day as retail favourite caps traded impressive volumes during the day. ASCO traded over 76,000 shares and closed at Rs.213.70 gaining 8% for the day. ERI witnessed volatility throughout the day and closed at Rs17.20 after reaching an intraday high of Rs.17.60. SFS emerged as the top retail favourite after its share split, as over 7.3mn shares changed hands during the day. The counter gained an impressive 13.35% and closed at Rs.9.
In addition, volumes were led by ATL,FLCH and RAL whilst OFEQ emerged as the top gainer on thin trade.
