April 26, 2012 (LBO) – Sri Lankan stocks edged up Thursday on buying interest in selected counters, brokers said, while the foreign exchange market was subdued after bank treasurers met regulators.

Colombo's broader All Share Price Index was up five-points or 0.09 percent to 5,441.01, while the more liquid Milanka Price Index lost 26.18 points or 0.53 percent to close at 4,860.62, according to figures published by the Colombo Stock Exchange.

The day's turnover ended at 391.4 million rupees with foreign buying at 73.6 million rupees over sales of 58.0 million rupees.

Thursday's trading was dominated by Keells Hotels PLC, the hotel subsidiary of conglomerate John Keells Holdings PLC. Keells Hotel shares gained 40-cents to end at 13.10 rupees on trades of 3.8 million shares.

Shares of the Carsons Group, which has extensive interest in oil palms and beer, rose 8.30 rupees to end at 475.00 rupees. The fairly illiquid-stock saw 71,012 shares change hands over the bourse.

Softlogic Holding PLC, with interest in hospitals, retail and electronics, slipped 10-cents to 10.80 rupees on volumes of 2.8 million shares.

Sri Lanka's foreign exchange markets remained quiet, following a meeting between the Central Bank and bank treasurers. The meeting came a day after, officials said some dealers were being probed for foreign exchange transactions without underlying import deals.

The rupee was quoted around 131.50/132.50 at open but quotes dried up and later there were offers around 129.50 dealers said. Sri Lanka’s rupee fell to a record 132.20 against the dollar breaking the previous record of 131.60 rupees recorded on March 19.
