July 02, 2012 (LBO) – Sri Lankan share prices slipped 0.25 percent on Monday, while the turnover plunged to a record low for this year, on the lack of buying support across the bourse, brokers said.

The key All Share Price Index dipped 12.84 points to 4,952.93, and the liquid Milanka Price Index gained 20.96 points or 0.47 percent to close at 4,404.16. The S&P Sri Lanka 20 indice, which tracks the top 20 liquid counters, slipped 0.25 percent or 6.98 points to close at 2,810.37, according to Colombo Stock Exchange figures.

Monday’s turnover was 91.65 million rupees, the lowest for the year, but a shade higher than a historic low of 80.9 million rupees posted on April 30, 2009, CSE figures showed.

Foreign buying was 35.52 million rupees on sales of 4.48 million rupees.

Turnover was dominated by conglomerate Aitken Spence Holdings PLC, which has investments ranging from leisure to logistics. The counter rose 4.00 rupees to 114.90 rupees on trades of 181,328 shares.

NDB Bank, a development financier and commercial lender, closed flat at 100.00 rupees on trades of 116,900 shares.

Tokyo Cement, the partially Japanese-owned cement maker, gained 10 cents to 30.00 rupees on trades of 100,003 shares.

The market is closed on Tuesday on account of a Buddhist holiday.

Trade Summary Market - 02/07/2012 020712
Jul 02, 2012 (LBT) - The market opened on a week note with the ASPI losing 0.3% to close at 4953 as a result of subdued investor participation given tomorrow’s holiday. Market turnover declined to a new low falling to LKR92 mn, the lowest in 3 years. The only significant trades for the day included Aitken Spence, National Development Bank and Tokyo Cement changing hands which collectively accounted for 39% of the day’s total. Gainers matched losers with Mercantile Shipping, Royal Palms Beach and J.L. Morison rising by 26.8%, 14.7% and 14.4% offsetting losses in Lanka Ventures, HDFC Bank and People's Leasing which declined by 9.7%, 8.6% and 6.8% respectively.

In economics news, inflation for the month of June increased to a high of 9.3% which is notably higher than 7.0% reported in February. The annual average inflation also increased marginally to 5.8% in June from 5.6% in May. Given the cost push nature of Sri Lanka’s inflation, we believe that high inflation may continue in the next few months on the back of higher import prices as a result of the depreciation of the rupee together with the rise in domestic interest rates. Meanwhile Sri Lanka's budget deficit has soared in the first four months of 2012 to LKR286 bn, with recurrent expenditure growth of 24% compared to 7.2% revenue growth. However, the proportionately higher weighting on domestic banking sources to finance the deficit would however be a relief to rising inflation notwithstanding the possibility of slowing down the growth through crowding out domestic private investment.

We believe that the ‘herd mentality’ has been the main catalyst for bullish or bearish trajectories of the market in the recent past and should be avoided in order to preserve capital and generate sustainable alpha in the medium to longer term. In order to benefit fully from a flight to quality strategy however, investors may need to maintain a healthy investment horizon and provide sufficient time for their investments to generate alpha.

While the equity market has a notorious tendency to rush from one side to another in response to the ebb and flow of optimism or pessimism, we recommend investors to make a directional call, build a quality portfolio and take advantage of what is increasingly becoming a ‘stockpickers’ market.
