Sri Lanka's stocks ended a losing streak and closed up0 .21 percent Thursday with large cap stocks trading on higher prices analysts said.

The All Share Price Index gained 10.75 points to close at 5,038.15 up 0 .21 percent while the Milanka Index of more liquid stocks fell 1.17 points (0.02 percent) to close at 4,692.82 and the S&P index of large cap stocks rose 15.80 points (0.56 percent) to close at 2,847.50.

The turnover for the day was Rs.634.8 million.

The market unwrapped the 4th day of the week by continuing the yesterday’s momentum. Index values were gradually increased with in the first half and began to fall down gradually in latter part of the day, a stock broker said.

250 counters were traded during the day. John Keells Holdings PLC (Rs. 218.8million), The Lion Brewery Ceylon PLC (Rs. 63.2 million) and Sampath Bank PLC (Rs. 45.4 million) were the major contributors to the daily turnover. The best performing sectors for the day were Diversified Holdings (Rs. 256.5million) and Bank Finance Insurance (Rs. 168.6 million).

The total traded volume for the day was 34 million. This was a 26% reduction against the previous day and the highest traded stock for the day was Renuka Agri Foods PLC with 6.9 million shares changing hands. The market recorded a net foreign inflow of Rs. 134.5 million.(Bandula)

Aug 23, 2012 (LBT) - The bourse experienced mixed sentiments during the day and closed the day gaining marginally. Turnover posted also showed a decent figure owing to a few block trades on fundamentally strong counters whilst profit taking was seen on the retail favourites.

The benchmark index gained 10.75 points to close at 5,038 whilst the more liquid MPI shed a marginal 1.17 points to close at 4,692. Total turnover for the day was over 634mn. (Approximately USD 4.8 million) Total volume traded was over 34K. 3 block trades were witnessed during the day and they amounted to 36% of the days turnover. Market heavyweight JKH continued to be the most sought after cap as it went on to emerge as the top contributor for the 3rd consecutive day. JKH saw a crossing where 3 blocks totaling 888,000 shares change hands at Rs.199/198. CFIN also witnessed 193,000 shares change hands at Rs.133 via a crossing whilst RAL traded 6mn shares at Rs.4.20.

Turnover levels were again dominated by accumulation on fundamentally strong counters such as LION,SAMP and COMB. Sampath Bank also traded an attractive volume during the day and gained a healthy Rs.6.60cents to close at Rs.178.10. LION also traded its quantities between Rs.220 and Rs.230 and closed the day at Rs.229.90 trading 274,825 shares. Renewed interest was seen on Insurance sector giant CINS as it traded over 13,000 shares and contributed 9.8mn towards the day’s tally. The cap closed the day at Rs.749.60 gaining Rs.22.50 for the day. AHUN also continued its accumulation and contributed healthy figures for the day.

Retail activity showed mixed signs during the day as profit taking took place on most of the favourites. YORK the cap which led the rally during the entire week witnessed profit taking during the day as it shed a massive 9.62% for the day. The counter closed at Rs.19 after reaching a high of Rs.20.50. EAST also witnessed selling pressure during the day and closed at Rs.13.60 shedding 4.86% for the day. Penny stocks BIL and LOFC also witnessed selling pressure whilst accumulation continued on PAP and FLCH. Further, retail volumes were topped by TESS,ATL and GLAS whilst CPRT emerged as the top gainer.
