Oct 24, 2012 (LBT) - Market’s stay in the green territory was short-lived as indices went on to close in red after a lethargic day’s trading. Volumes traded showed a severe downturn during the day owing to very low retail participation whilst accumulation was seen on few caps by Institutions. The benchmark index shed 13.52 points to close at 5,543 whilst the more liquid MPI shed 15.81 points to close at 5,075. Total turnover for the day was 291mn. (Approximately USD 2.2mn) Total volume traded was over 8.4mn

No block trades were witnessed unlike yesterday to bolster turnover although impressive volumes of Banking sector heavyweights changed hands on the normal board. Presumed foreign interest was seen on COMB voting and nonvoting as the counters collectively pumped in 28% of the market’s turnover. COMB.X closed at Rs.92 gaining 2.22% whilst COMB.N closed at Rs.104.30.

Further, Institutional activity was seen on counters such as HNB.X,AHPL and AHUN as the respective caps traded impressive volumes for the day. Manufacturing sector cap LLUB continued to witness buying interest around Rs.200 as it went onto trade over 140K shares for the day. Retail activity was very minimal during the day although some activity was seen on some speculative counters. CSF traded over 320K shares between Rs.10.70 and Rs.11.20 and closed the day at Rs.10.90 gaining 1.87%. TESS also witnessed some volatility and closed the day at Rs.2.50 after reaching an intraday high of Rs.2.70.

Further, volumes were topped by FLCH,SEMB.X and PLC whilst BREW emerged as the top gainer on thin trade.

Obviously the foreigners (assuming genuine institutions with good research) think that there is potential in our companies and the market.

Most of us retailers are only worried about what will happen during next few days and weeks, not to mention news and meetings.
