Currently it is a best managed tea company in Sri-Lanka. They had good performance despite difficult period during last two quarters. . keep an eye on strong recovery in tea prices globally. In addition, tea related companies such as TPL and MPRH produce some of the high quality high grown tea in the world. There will be great demand for quality tea in the coming years and demand will outpace supply for quality tea. Global tea inventory level should go down toward second half of this year. After UVA quality season we are going to see western quality season. After coffee, it is going to be quality tea time. On the other hand other commodity prices such as oil, palm oil, rubber, gold and grain will stay low. USD and frontier market currencies will shine in 2016 and 2017. Still the USA consumers are the best spenders in the world and will spend more on quality beverages such as tea in the coming decade.

Good luck!

I don’t have any idea about that. I was watching some other stocks today.  We hardly see any big quantity for some valuable stocks at lower prices. Remember in the short run stocks prices can have volatility. Stay with monitoring global tea prices. If tea prices started to go above the cost of production all listed tea companies will make profits.

I believe there should be light end of the tunnel for listed tea companies in Sri-Lanka. Global tea output down by 11%. Upto April, Sri-Lanka was able to maintain good output. However, its out put in May also down. Globally tea inventory level should go down in 2015/ 16. Therefore we can reasonably expect higher tea prices in the coming months and quarters due to demand.

Finally Kenya is getting attractive tea average prices. There was demand for  tea in the Colombo auction last week. Tea prices went up by Rs.10 to 40 per Kg. Kenya is moving into dry season and global tea output and inventory level will go down further. In Kenya, the showers are reducing, the days drier and the night cooler which means downwards crop intakes. Tea stocks to watch in the CSE are TPL, MPRH (Management Company of Bogawantalawa plantations) and UDPL. They produced some of the best high quality high grown tea in the world. It is time to do some home work on tea stocks.

Wage negotiation next year. Trade union demands for 45 % increase. This will definitely hurt profit margin or make big loss. I think better not to touch plantation sector until this issue over.

I think already tea stocks have factored to negative factors. It is not next year .If I am correct, wage negotiations are going on between unions and plantation companies these days.  They are suggesting productive based incentives.

Plantation companies propose productivity-based increase

Who thought Kenyan tea prices will recover within the short period.  IMF is correct in forecasting recovery in tea prices in 2015. I don’t think global tea trading companies like to see end of tea industry. So they also will actively participate in tea auctions in the future to protect tea industry. Tea trading companies know long term prospects of this industry. What we need to watch is passing tea average prices such as Rs.400, Rs.450 and Rs.500 in the coming months. In other words tea prices above the cost of production.

If tea prices stay above Rs.500 almost all tea companies will make attractive profits.  Be bullish when tea prices hit Rs.400, Rs.450 and Rs.500 gradually. Then tea chart will show you uptrend.  Tea prices have bottomed out now. Despite lower tea prices some tea companies were able to outperform others in their industry. Share price wise, both TPL and WATA have given very attractive returns to investors in the current bull market.  TPL exceptionally did well. One year EPS performance of both MPRH and BOPL are similar to both SUN and WATA. On valuation both MPRH and BOPL have more value than SUN and WATA now. Net asset per share of MPRH is higher than SUN as well.

Global tea outputs are falling and inventory level should go down further in 2015 and 2016. We will wait and see.

When you want to buy tea stocks things to watch:

· Tea prices breaking records and fetching tea prices above the cost of production or identifying tea bull chart in advance.
·  Industry outlook in the mid and long term
·  General market situation
·  Stages and phases in bull market (there should be good demand for food related stocks in the coming stages of current bull market)

Good luck!
