After seeing this post, I did a simple analysis of CABO's recent financial statements last night.

It appears that CABO has long term investments (shares) and property that are valued in the financial statements at acquisition cost. The actual market price of these investments is at least 3 times the acquisition cost. See Annual Report for details. If revalued, the NAV of CABO would be in excess of Rs 150 - and that's a conservative figure...

I believe that CABO is what some of you describe as a 'hidden gem' - and I bought some this morning!

On the same note RENU's large investments portfolio has not being revalued. RENU's hotel price is like free if you do that. But we should also remember these are unrealised markup when it happens . Both RENU and CABO is acting more like a investment company compared to their core businesses now.

@slstock:You are absolutely right; we need to evaluate RENU & CABO for their investment portfolio, not just for their core operations. The fact that their core businesses are profitable and cash positive are additional positive factors that only reinforce their attractiveness.

I am surprised that this forum did not identify CABO earlier; all these hidden reserves were clearly stated in their Annual Report for 2009-10.

This RENU, CABO has been promoted in investnow.lk site from time to time. Somebody would buy at low prices and then post some messages, hey guys look what I found, look at their portfolio, isn't this great, this is a hidden gem. and the price goes up for a few days.
If a person has a property and a portfolio that person is favorable for marrying. But is that valid for a company? Just because they have a portfolio of JKH, HNB either they have to sell them to increase their other income as a one-time profit.
These assets are locked up money which a company could have used for increasing their profits but they didn't.
Just because a company has a property in colombo does not mean they are going to build a hotel next year. most of the properties are leased for others who they have a close relationship for years. They are not going to get rid of them just because retailers want them.
On the other hand if the government wants to acquire land in fort for development projects companies will have to give in not on their conditions. Look at Singapore.

@wis: You have made some interesting points, some of which are certainly valid... (The following is not directed at you; I just want to clarify some fundamental concepts.)

However, my view is that companies buy shares for the same reason that we do - for profit. Sure, the profit will get recorded only when the shares are sold. That's when the company's NAV will increase... Sure, the value of their investments could fall. Sure, their properties could get taken over. These are the risks of the marketplace.

But how do investors value shares? Generally as a multiple of what it will earn in FUTURE (PE Ratio), right? So, we buy shares in the expectation that companies will make profits IN FUTURE - future profits to justify today's price! Bad things could happen to other companies too - H1N1, epidemics on plantations, floods, anything... What then?

So, when someone identifies a company that has invested its surplus cash wisely and whose intrinsic worth is more than its market price TODAY, I would be inclined to buy it.

PS: This is not a promotional spiel. I am not recommending that anybody buys or sells any particular share.

@FIRE123: Based on my simple analysis, CABO is a good share to buy - especially if you buy it at a price level of less than Rs 155. Its net assets per share (if revalued) would be in excess of that figure. Hold until you make a decent profit.

I am holding some shares and my target exit price is Rs 180. Yesterday, it jumped to Rs 175 and fell back to Rs 156.20.

This is just my personal opinion. I recommend that you also do your own analysis and get other views.
