Sri Lanka has emerged the clear winner in a holiday cost of living index of long-haul tourist destinations, according to a survey conducted in United Kingdom.

For a basket of 10 categories including a meal out, drinks and sun cream, Sri Lanka was 38% cheaper than its nearest rival, Thailand.

Vietnam, which now welcomes an increasing number of UK visitors, was rated the third least expensive country in the list, with Hong Kong the most expensive overall and China showing the biggest price rise over the last year.

Prices in South Africa have gone down 27%, with the country now more tourist-friendly financially following the price hikes during the 2010 World Cup. Barbados was the most expensive Caribbean destination, with the Dominican Republic the cheapest.

Oh... thanks for sharing.... this news to me is not so bullish... Sri Lanka is having very limited number of room capacity therefore to become a highly profitable industry have to break away from being value destination to niche destination with high value. This status of value destination would be a bullish news for small boutique type hoteliers but definitely not for hotel chains.. The moral of the story ... critically re evaluate long term prospective of HTL sector..

this is one way of switching from "cheap value" to niche,

"John Keells group has revamped and rebranded two hotels on Sri Lanka's south coast, sharply raising rates as it lures tourists with leopard and whale watching tours."

Instead of just showing the beach, show the suddas whales and wildlife.
