The PUCSL has noted that it is in the process of preparing the proposals to address the financial crisis faced by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and other power producers.
The country's power sector recorded massive losses due to the increase in thermal power generation.
Power and Energy Minister Champika Ranawaka said the losses of the CEB for the year have been estimated at Rs. 29 billion, an amount he says could even increase further.
PUCSL Chairman Dr. Jayatissa de Costa has said that any increase in the power tariffs would be quite low and would not be applied to all sectors.
Dr. de Costa has observed that the Commission was in possession of the data handed by the CEB on its financial situation.
He has said that although the Treasury could be expected to bridge the gap to address the financial crisis of the CEB, a cost effective tariff system would be the solution to the problem.
However, Dr. de Costa has said that since electricity is an essential commodity, the Commission would have to implement the government's policy in the matter.
The government commissioned the PUCSL to regulate the utilities in the country.
