Oct 30, Colombo: The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has said that a slight increase in electricity tariffs was a likely result in the process of addressing the losses incurred by the power sector.

The PUCSL has noted that it is in the process of preparing the proposals to address the financial crisis faced by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and other power producers.

The country's power sector recorded massive losses due to the increase in thermal power generation.

Power and Energy Minister Champika Ranawaka said the losses of the CEB for the year have been estimated at Rs. 29 billion, an amount he says could even increase further.

PUCSL Chairman Dr. Jayatissa de Costa has said that any increase in the power tariffs would be quite low and would not be applied to all sectors.

Dr. de Costa has observed that the Commission was in possession of the data handed by the CEB on its financial situation.

He has said that although the Treasury could be expected to bridge the gap to address the financial crisis of the CEB, a cost effective tariff system would be the solution to the problem.

However, Dr. de Costa has said that since electricity is an essential commodity, the Commission would have to implement the government's policy in the matter.

The government commissioned the PUCSL to regulate the utilities in the country.

At one stage the Minister in charge claimed that he did the impossible by making a profit of some millions, which was a loss making concern for a very long time. The entire country said Hurrah///. But now it has turned around and now a loss making institution. In whatever language he trys to justify his claim, finally it is we who will have to pay for their sins.
Could the authorities prepare a list of all those Govt. Officials, Govt. Departments, Ministers etc who are in arrears of payment of their bills and who are refusing to pay their CEB Bills.
Don't you think it is their responsibility to inform the general public who have been paying their bills regularly leaving no arrears.
Will the authorities take this challange?
