Not sure NEST is a true monopoly. There are others also doing some of their businesses/products types

Nestle is not a monopoly, they have many competitors.

We can take DOCK and GRAN(Prima flour section) from listed companies as monopoly.

You can take SUGA as an oligopoly which only have one or two competitors

sorry it's a mistake.. thanks mono for correction. we can't consider SUGA as a as a sugar manufacturer anymore, because they have diversified after Distilleries purchased, Their vision also has changed dramatically. Smile

Thank you all , so the end result is we do not have many as some products are having competition from imports. Out of the above I would like to highlight:

Glass - Monopoly
CTC - Monopoly
LION - No as there is 1 other competitor so its Oligopoly
RCL - Imports
TWOOD - No so many others in this business
Dock - Monopoly ,
ECL - No as their business is not consuntrated on core any more
SOY - Confusing need to study
Gran - Holding company monopoly in one segment

What about Raigam Salt?

If we can study the earnings growth in Monopoly businesses highlighted above and invest carefully it will give us a steady growth year on year as there will be demand from local consumers. What do you think?

GRAN listed on CSE does not involve in flour production.

DOCK has several segments.

Ship building , ship repair , and heavy engineering.

There are other listed companies on CSE doing Ship repair and Heavy engineering. Recent venture of KAPI doing ship repair come to mind. But DOCK is the big boy for sure.

Once one local liquor producer was trying to import bottles intend of buying from glas. However, they found it is difficult to timely match bottle supply and production. Then solution was to maintain slack inuring an additional storage cost. Finally gave up importing.

Nevertheless glas is not a pure monopoly as salt says world competition has to be considered.

The question was Monopoly in Sri Lanka isn;t it? What are you guy saying?

If we consider the world, ofcourse none of the companies mentioned are monopolies. Not even CTC as there are so many tobacco companies in the world.

If you think there is no competition for glas, then it is a monopoly. In an open economy all most everything has a competition if you see the big picture. A monopoly may create due to several reasons

1. Legally one organization is authorized to sell (eg. shell gas few years back)
2. Huge capital investment prevent others entering the business
3. Only one producer has the technology to produce the product
4. Market is not enough to operate two or more firms.

One can argue based on 2 and 4. However, note we have an open economy.

I think Prima flour has a competitor call Serandib. They also run a flour making plant in colombo port I believe.
