SEC's appointment of the new Director General seems more political than professional as it is very reliably learnt that Varuna Epasingha is likely to be appointed as the new Director General of the SEC.
Closing date of the application for the DG's position is said to close on the 5th December 2011 and according to the former Chiarperson Ms Indrani Sugathadasa there have been more than 20 applicants to this post with considerable knowledge and experience in the industry. It is very suprising to note that Varuna Epasingha is tipped to be the Director General of the SEC even before any one of the potential applicants have been interviewed.
Therefore it is quite obvious that there were no intention to select the right person to the SEC through the correct process giving the current senior employees of the SEC the opportunity to be considered to the siad post. This is likely to give the wrong signals to the investors and general public with regard to the future direction of the Colombo Stock Exchange.
