Mar 19, 2012 (LBT) - Overall sentiments and retail acitivity was quiet compared to last week. However deals continued on index heavy caps despite the rupee hitting a record low today.

The benchmark ASPI gained a marginal 6.46 points to close at 5,449 whilst the liquid MPI went on to gain 31.57 points to close at 4,889. Total turnover for the day was 3.1bn (Approximately USD 24.4 million) Total volume traded was close to 38mn shares.

Heavyweight SPEN saw 3 blocks totaling 20,531,452 shares change hands at Rs.115. The counter contributed over 76% of the markets turnover and closed the day at Rs.116 gaining marginally. Market heavyweight JKH also continued to see interest from both high net worth’s and institutions during the day and went on to touch Rs.200 gaining 2.5% for the day. The counter also witnessed a block of 1.5mn shares change hands at Rs.200. Caps such as NDB and CTC also followed and saw blocks of 509,500 and 50,000 change hands at Rs.123 and Rs.510 respectively.

Banking sector heavyweight COMB again emerged as the most sought after banking sector counter during the day and contributed over 35mn towards the day’s turnover. Caps such as VONE and LOLC also witnessed similar interest to close the day on a positive note.

Retail favourite cap GREG(ERI) continued to witness heavy selling pressure during the day and closed the at Rs.15.90 losing marginally. HPWR witnessed renewed retail activity during the day and traded attractive volumes and closed the day at Rs.22 gaining marginally. Further, retail volumes were topped by both BLUE.X,BLUE.N whilst AGST emerged as the top gainer on thin trade.
