Sri Lanka's president has promised to free jailed former army chief Sarath Fonseka unconditionally and at the earliest opportunity, the ex-general's wife said on Thursday.

Anoma Fonseka said she met President Mahinda Rajapakse on Wednesday night and that he assured
her that her husband would be freed as soon as possible.

"I was promised that my husband will be cleared of all charges and released unconditionally," she told AFP.

There was no comment from Rajapakse's office, but an official confirmed on Wednesday that the retired four-star general, who unsuccessfully challenged Rajapakse in January 2010 elections, would be released "within days".

Fonseka fell out with the government over who should take credit for winning the separatist war against the Tamil Tiger rebels in May 2009. He challenged Rajapakse after quitting the army.

Two weeks after his election defeat, Fonseka was detained on a charge of corruption relating to military procurements. He was given a 30-month jail sentence in September 2010.

Earlier on Wednesday, Rajapakse met members of Fonseka's Democratic National Alliance (DNA) party to discuss the terms of his release, DNA legislator Tiran Alles told reporters.

The moves come ahead of talks later this week between Sri Lanka's foreign minister GL Peiris and US secretary of state Hillary Clinton in Washington.

The United States has been critical of Sri Lanka's rights record during the final stages of the civil war, which ended with victory for government forces in May 2009. Washington has repeatedly urged Colombo to release Fonseka.

In November, Fonseka was sentenced to three more years in jail for saying that Tiger rebels who surrendered had been killed on the orders of the president's brother Deleted Rajapakse, who is defence secretary.

Fonseka has also angered the government by saying he would testify before any international tribunal probing possible war crimes charges after the United Nations said thousands of civilians were killed in the last months of fighting.

If he has already served for what he had been found guilty of, then why a Cabinet approval is sought?

Former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka is most likely to be released from jail next Saturday – on the day of the third year anniversary of the war victory against LTTE separatists, the Daily Mirror learns.

A Senior Cabinet Minister told Daily Mirror yesterday that United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) seniors have pointed out that if something unfortunate were to happen to Mr. Fonseka while in jail, the government might have to face disastrous repercussions locally and internationally.
“Therefore it is likely that President Mahinda Rajapaksa will announce a special decree as executive president to pardon Mr. Fonseka and release him from jail,” the senior minister said.

Meanwhile, Democratic National Alliance (DNA) parliamentarian Tiran Alles who was for a long time engaged in a dialogue with the government confirmed the release of Mr. Fonseka and said it would be, ‘as early as possible’.

“I had an hour-long cordial and successful discussion with President Rajapaksa this morning at Temple Trees and I am confident he will release him soon,” Mr. Alles said yesterday.

He said there were a few minor issues to be sorted out before the announcement of the presidential decree and expressed hopes that the process could be finalized in a day or two.

Mr. Alles who spoke to us from the Navaloka Hospital while visiting Mr. Fonseka said he was having a cough and other than that he was in good health.
Mr. Fonseka, contested the general election in 2010 and was elected to parliament from the Colombo District polling more than 98,000 votes.
Mr. Fonseka was an MP till he was sentenced to serve a two and half year jail term and lost his seat in parliament. (Sandun A. Jayasekera)

If he is released, it's fair to re-instate his medals, position, pension etc.to salute this war hero.

In this digital age, history cannot be written the way it was when the Mahawansa was written.
He does not need any of those as people know who really won the War and the Election too.
