President obtained Cabinet approval to release SF
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has obtained the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers to release former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka, Presidential Spokesman Bandula Jaysekara reveals short while ago. However, questioned over the issue by the media personnel at the weekly Cabinet press briefing, Cabinet Spokesman and Deputy Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardana said the issue of “the release of Sarath Fonseka” was not taken to table. Fonseka’s wife Anoma Fonseka speaking to The Nation said President Rajapaksa has given assurance that he will be freed unconditionally soon. Anyhow, she has no idea when the release of former Army Commander will take place.

Sri Lanka cabinet approves former Army Commander's release from prison
May 17, Colombo: Sri Lanka's cabinet of ministers has approved the release of jailed ex-Army Commander Sarath Fonseka from prison, government media said.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has received the cabinet approval to pardon the former military chief from his three-year prison sentence.

President Rajapaksa has assured Fonseka's wife yesterday that Fonseka would be released soon.

Presidential Spokesman Bandula Jayasekara has said that accordingly the proposal made by the President received the green light of the Cabinet.

Fonseka is currently serving a three-year prison term after he was found guilty by a civil court for inciting violence in the White Flag case.

Fonseka, who contested the last presidential election as the common opposition candidate, was arrested on February 8, 2010 and court martial action was initiated against him.

He served a 30-month prison term given by a Court Martial in 2010 after finding him guilty of four charges related to alleged irregularities in military procurements during his tenure as Army Chief. That prison term ended last month.

If he has already served for what he had been found guilty of, then why a Cabinet approval is sought?

Secondly, how this will have any impact on the economy ?

Enlighten me please ?

A very good move.

This news will let the ordinary people to forget their day today issues for sometimes. Basically we all can talk about this for a while and forget about the rest.

Government cleverly played the game. However releasing him is a much needed action.

Our president released so many criminals from law, DumindaSilva from child rape, Kesara Senanayaka from corruption case, wife of Minister Milroy Fernando from murder case(death sentence), KP from terroerism charges etc etc.

Did he ever get cabinet approvals for those releases? then why only SF case he took cabinet approval?

Government every action has become a joke..

It's a good move. They should have done it long time before. But still I am wondering why do they need cabinet approval? As malanp stated, president has used his executive power to release many prisoners in the past? Why only special case to our national hero?

The problem with us in Sri Lanka is, we talk / argue over the topic and not the issue and this tread is another such typical case.

That is why what we are and that is why we are going to say like this (or worse than this even) in the next century too. Very Happy

Yes..Monster.. I am fully agree with you.. No approval nothing required.. with Excutive power he can simply released... no need to having talks for month as mentioned in the papers with different parties... mean time finally he served all the 30 months in jail. This is wonder if Asia.. Very Happy

This is neither a Good nor Bad move!

I am still struggling to understand how such a move will have any effect on the overall performances as the same people are calling shots.

I can understand if Mr 10% was sent to prison, then it would have sent a clear signal.

SF granted bail in one case

What is this conditional bail? As my understanding, he is supposed to be released unconditionally.
