If someone knows what this negative goodwill is please let me know. (I didn't go through the reports much)
NAV-----------5.85.......... (excluding timber and plantations 4.74)
If we exclude negative goodwill, the EPS will be (0.08)
Also note the EPS mentioned is for the total net profit. only 1.36 is attributable to equity holders)
6 months ended ------- EPS 0.07, but it includes change of fair value in investments is more than the net profit earned. If excluded it will be negative EPS (I'm not telling we should exclude but I'm just being extremely pessimistic)
Since it is an investment company, it seems to be a fair deal, but as a company, it is not so attractive to me.

Negative goodwill implies a bargain purchase. As per revised SLAS25 business combination/IFRS3, Full amount of Negative goodwill can be considered as an immediate extraordinary gain on the day of the sale rather than write down the gain to zero through series of allocations(may be some conditions there)
With revised standards for Business combination/Fair value adjustment/Investment property & etc, some companies can show a good profit,if they have valuable assets.
As you mentioned it is an investment company,I also wish, negative goodwill would be a part of the business. Also if stock market shows a upward momentum in coming months, their some of adjusted losses for shares also can be revised.
I also have the same doubt!. Was this a real bargain?npp wrote:market bull wrote:Negative goodwill arises when the price paid for an acquisition is less than the fair value of its net tangible assets.

yes, i particularly wanted to know about these bargain acquisitions. were they really a bargain?
and again we can check the recurring EPS, if we neglect this, the recurring EPS will be in the negative.
How would you value this company? P/E or P/BV or any other means?
