The Colombo Equity Market displayed lackluster behavior during the first two days and gained momentum in the latter part of the week. Market capitalization increased by Rs.73.3bn (+4.0%WoW) during the week. ASI advanced by 192.51 points (+4.0%WoW) to end at 4,991.21 while sensitive MPI advanced by 203.22 points (+4.8%WoW) to close at 4,449.98. Average daily turnover was at Rs.373.4mn (+11.3%WoW). Average daily volume of the turnover for the week was 28.9mn, an increase of 55.3%WoW. Foreign participation for the week stood at 17.0% of the total market activity and at the end of the week foreign investors were the net buyers with a net foreign inflow of Rs.8.7mn.
The Colombo Equity Market opened for a fresh week in the green territory on Monday however on a weaker ground with lackluster momentum. ASI increased by 12.74 points (+0.27%) to close at 4,811.44 and liquid MPI gained by 17.62 points (+0.41%) to end at 4.264.38. Market turnover was thin at Rs.153.4mn and Market RSI was 31.6. Premier Blue Chip John Keells Holdings (Rs.26.4mn) was the top contributor to the daily turnover. In addition Carsons Cumberbatch (Rs.20.1mn) and Environmental Resources Investments (Rs.5.5mn) made notable contributions to the daily turnover. Heavy trading activity was seen in counters such as Nanda Investments and Finance, HVA Foods and Sanasa Development Bank.
Market ended on opposite note on Tuesday where benchmark All Share Index dropped marginally by 3.83 index points (-0.08%) to close at 4,807.55 and sensitive Milanka Index gained marginally by 4.87 points (+0.11%) to close at 4,269.25. Daily market turnover was low at Rs.242.4mn Central Finance topped the turnover list today with an amount of Rs.78.3mn followed by John Keells Holdings (Rs.30.1mn) and Commercial Bank - non-voting (Rs.14.5mn). Panasian Power, Environmental Resources Investments and People’s Finance were the heavily traded counters.
Market demonstrated recovery on Wednesday and closed in green territory. Benchmark ASI gained 37.24 index points (+0.77%) to close at 4,844.79 while MPI gained 34.64 points (+0.81%) to close at 4,303.89. Daily market turnover was low at Rs.284.8mn Commercial Bank topped the turnover list today with an amount of Rs.87.5mn followed by John Keells Holdings (Rs.28.7mn) and DFCC Bank (Rs.18.2mn). All the sectors closed with positive returns today except Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals. Sectors such as Motors, Plantations and Investment Trusts were the top gained sectors during the day. Lanka Orix Finance, Lanka Orix Leasing and Environmental Resources Investments were among the heavily traded stocks during the day.
On Thursday market recovered further with renewed investor sentiment. ASI gained 78.23 index points (+1.61%) to close at 4,923.02 while sensitive MPI gained 77.68 points (+1.80%) to close at 4,381.57. Daily market turnover stood at Rs.428.06mn. Ascot Holdings topped the turnover list today with an amount of Rs.48.6mn followed by Commercial Bank (Rs.24.1mn) and John Keells Holdings (Rs.22.6mn). HVA Foods, Environmental Resources, Lanka Orix Finance were among the heavily traded stocks during the day.
Colombo stocks closed its operations for the week on Friday and demonstrated heavy retail and institutional participation. Benchmark indices closed with positive returns. ASI increased by 68.19 points (+1.39%) to close at 4,991.21 while MPI advanced by 68.41 points (+1.56%) to close at 4,449.98. Commercial Bank counters (voting & non-voting) topped the turnover list today where the aggregate value accounted for Rs.127.8mn. further Textured Jersey (Rs.34.6mn) and Dialog Axiata (Rs.30.6mn) contributed notable to the daily turnover. HVA Foods, Environmental Resources Investments counters (Voting and Warrants) and Grain Elevators were among the mostly traded stocks for the day. At the end of week market RSI was at 50.2.
