Simply put a portion paid out of profits to existing share holders....there can be interim dividends and a final divident....these are based on the Financial performance of the Company.....Eg: Gran paying a Rs.1 pay out after some time due to the company and the industry doing well . Some companies will do well and not pay a didvidend as well prefering instead to reatain the earnings Smile
