Jul 12, 2012 (LBT) - The All Share Price Index rose 3.7 points to close at 4,872.1 points (0.1%) whilst the Milanka Price Index shed 9.8 points to close at 4,312.5 points (-0.2%). The total turnover was LKR336.7mn (USD2, 520.2 k) vs. 12-months average daily turnover of LKR 1, 459.7mn (USD10, 925.9k) whilst the volume traded for the day was 14,338.0k against the 12-months average daily volume of 60,423 k. Top traded counters were Kelani Tyres LKR95.6 mn (USD715.3k, -0.8%), John Keells Holdings LKR 27.3mn (USD204.3k, -1.1%), Sampath Bank LKR 24.7 mn (USD185.0K, 0.6%), Laugfs Gas (Non Voting) LKR 23.1mn (USD 173.2k, 10.1%) and Carson Cumberbatch LKR 22.3mn (USD167.0 k, -0.2%).

The Colombo bourse concluded the day on a mixed note where All share price index edging up marginally whilst Milanka price index went on to close in the red. Market witnessed two off the market deals which contributed circa 35.2% towards the daily turnover. Kelani Tyres saw 3.7mn shares changed hands at LKR 25.80 whilst 153,483 shares of Sampath Bank transferred at LKR 150.10. Subsequent to crossings, Kelani Tyres topped the volume list and emerged as the major turnover generator adding circa 28.4% towards the day’s turnover to close at LKR25.6 whilst heavy weight John Keells Holding reserved the second place in the top contributors list. Further, Sampath bank also became as one of the top donors owing to crossings and closed the day at LKR 150.10 whilst institutional interest was fixed on Carson Cumberbatch. In addition, following the dividend announcement of LKR 1.50, aggressive retail interest was witnessed on Laugfs Gas (Non Voting) which brought the counter to be among the top contributors and counter registered a significant price appreciation of 10.1% to close the day at LKR 13.9.

Foreign purchases amounted to LKR147.7mn (USD1, 105.5k), whilst foreign sales amounted to LKR160.4mn (USD 1,200.6k). Market capitalization is at LKR1, 861.7bn. YTD performance is 19.8%.

July 12, 2012 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's stocks closed marginally higher Thursday while the rupee closed weaker from opening, brokers and dealers said.

The Colombo All Share Price Index closed up 0.08 percent at 4,872.06 points and the S&P SL20 index of large cap stocks closed 0.17 percent higher at 2,780.34.

Turnover was 336 million rupees.

The closed around 133.80/90 to the US dollar in the spot market after opening around 133.60/90 dealers said.

Aitken Spence closed at 113.60 up 3.20 rupees, Aviva Insurance fell 3.90 to close at 149.00 rupees, Capital Development and Investment Company Plc closed up 29.90 tat 234.90 rupees, Cargills (Ceylon) closed at 142.10 up 10 cents.

Carsons Cumberbatch closed at 463.10 down 90 cents, Central Finance closed at 127.20 down 1.80 rupees, Commercial Bank of Ceylon closed at 98.50 down 50 cents and Dialog Axiata closed flat at 6.00 rupees and John Keells Holdings closed at 180.50 down 2.00 rupees.
